hernia w/ gastric bypass? anyone?

Recommended Posts

So I went to my surgeon on 7/2. He said that I have 2 ruptured hernias in my stomach. One is above.my belly button the other about 5in to the left of it. Theyre gonna repair em both and do my gastric bypass same time. Until then....he gave me pain meds to use for the extreme discomfort.

Is anyone else having this done?

I have a very large Hiatal Hernia. It allows my entire stomach to go into my thoracic cavity. (chest) It has caused me quite the bit of problems and initially I went to a surgeon for the hernia.

He would not do the surgery unless I also had weight loos surgery at the same time. He said it would just keep coming back. I did not go back to see him because it felt like he was pushing me into an elective surgery.

My current surgeon has told me I need to have it done with the hernia surgery because if I don't, I really cannot do it in the future unless they undo the hernia surgery.

They are telling me the hernia part is going to be pretty extensive. It took me some time to decide but I finally decided on both surgeries.

So, yep, hernia surgery and gastric bypass.

They did my bypass this past wednesday and found a hernia that they went ahead and repaired during this surgery.

Is your current weight 159? Why did you need gastric bypass?

Yes, it is. I had been sleeved Novemeber 2012 and had a congenital issue called a cascade stomach that caused my stomach to flip weirdly and increased my reflux. The concern was that I would aspirate. I am a rarity, though. So, since meds were not helping, they had to do a revision.

Oh wow. My surgeon was very much against me having the sleeve for the same reason. Good luck in the future with this new surgery!

i have been kind of worried over both of the surgeries but it is starting to subside.

Yeah, I went from having the lap band in 2003, to it removal in 2011. Sleeved in 2012. Now with the bypass in 2014. Was not the plan but it is better than aspiration

This will be my 2nd hernia repair. The first one they cut me breast bone to belly button. (Craptastic dr!) So when I opted for bypass....new surgeon was thrilled when he seen my hernia that I was opting for both surgeries. He said gastric would help keep it from comin back but without it.....it was inevitably gonna return.

Mine too is very large. (Bigger than a softball) ....and into my chest. He said it was the 2nd largest of his 30+ yr career. :-/ not sure how I feel about that! Lol

I had a ventral hernia surgery last july. Then I went to see about the gastric bypass and had a endoscopy and they found a hyatal hernia so they plan to repair it while they do the gastric bypass. I think I am falling apart..

It seems like hernias are fairly common. Often you don't even know you have one. If they are performing surgery anyway they will repair them. Sometimes they find one unexpectedly when they go in. I had none at the time of my RNY but six months later when I had my gallbladder out they found and repaired a hernia.

You know, I have had testing prior to my surgery that the hernia showed up in, but I already knew I had it.

It has shown up in a chest xray, chest ct scan, upper endoscopy, upper gi and there is one more but I can't remember what it is!

A few of the tests were for other issues and the radiologist had it in his report and no dr ever told me about it. I am crazy about keeping my own medical chart so when I got my reports I saw it.

I went through all of this terrible chest pain and had to have a whole cardiac work up and I was fine, which is good, but I was still having the pain.

I finally asked my dr if she thought it could be the hernia and she said she bets it is. It just normally wouldn't present with side effects but mine sure does!!!

Mine has caused chest and abdominal pain. They can be symptomatic. Mine sure has been and my surgeon seen it. He put me on meds til surgery to help with it.....and its helping.

I have also had to be on medications, and three anti acid or med for reflux. It has helped but not to the point that I have had no symptoms.

On the flip side, since i have been on the liquid diet, I have had not one issue.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
