My Endoscopy Day x....x

Recommended Posts

So I woke up at 6 this morning just because, even though i was told to be at the hospital at 9 for my endoscopy. Then I got a phonecall from them telling me i am late and that i was supposed to get there at 6:30 and prep for surgery which is at 8:30. So I hop in the car without my ID because I was so tired I forgot my purse, and start speeding there because I was late and the place is an hour away . Then when I get there they tell me my names not on the list and eventually we figure out that there are two endoscopy places on that floor and mine is in the ambulatory surgery endoscopy area (what the heck is the difference?) by the time i tell them im here it's like 8' o clock.

Then i wait for another few hour because there was an emergency person who had to go first. but I end up getting my IV at ten and I go into the room at 11 -___-. They never asked me for my ID which I was glad about because I didnt have it but still thats a little suspicious. Anyway I remember talking to the anesthesiologist about what college I was going to then I was out like a light.

I had some wild, psychedelic dreams, that was the craziest thing that ever happen to me. Basically I was high as a kite. I kept complaining to the nurse that I wanted to leave and take my IV out while I was half asleep, i also kept asking her what time it was and whats going on.(lol poor nurse) I eventually came to my senses. I don't know if that guy gave me a high dose or what. even when I was walking my head was spinning.

Then as soon as I got home I had to go to a pool to get recertified as a lifeguard. Thank god my friend gave me a ride because I was too disoriented to drive. I somehow managed to swim 20 laps and do all of the drills/rescues correctly while slightly under the influence and I passed lol. Now i am exhausted I havent eaten anything all day except two crackers and an apple juice lol, so I will go eat/pass out now. Just wanted to tell my story/ document my experience.

My doctor told me i will be having my endoscopy and colonoscopy at the same time. Did anyone else experience this?

I have been having problems with low Iron levels so my pcp sent me to a grasto doctor and he wanted the colonoscopy and EGD. I had them done Friday. Both tests only took about 45 minutes. They found some irritation in my esophagus and now I am waiting to see if it is an infection. I hope it isn't an infection since my surgery is July 8th. I really don't want any delays.

Jessiquoi - having both done is nothing to worry about. I was asleep for them and before I knew it I was done. The worst part is the prep work for the colonoscopy. I was sloshing by the time I was done with the 4 liters. Good luck.

My endoscopy was uneventful (June 26th). I had to pee in a cup which I was not prepared for, and I had just gone to the bathroom. I got gowned and put in a bed, IV'd with just saline and I was chilling for about 45 minutes to an hour before I got taken back and I was in the scope room for about 5 minutes while they put the teeth guard un my mouth and adjusted me to lay against a lift, the anesthisiologist came in and next thing I know the room was fuzzy and then I was out.

I woke up about 30 minutes later in post op, and started asking my nurse a bunch of random weird questions about where she is from (S. Africa btw) and I regained full consciousness and full use of my apendages within minutes. I was able to walk to the restroom and use the toilet and then I changed back into my old clothes and was ready to go even though I had to sit around and wait for another 20 minutes before they would let me go.

I felt weird in my stomach area for about 4 days afterwards and my hunger pains had changed, but now I am full recovered and it was a very boring 4 hours of my morning.

Hi @Pelicanlady. What was the result of your EGD. I just had mine last week and there were a couple of erosions (possibly infections). They did biopsies on them and I won't get the pathology report back until next week. Did you have to take any medications? Did it delay your surgery? I am curious to know because my last weigh in is this month and my surgery hopefully will be next month. Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi Ladiec2, They found a small infection after my EGD. I was so worried that it would delay my surgery, but it didn't. I was put on an antibiotic for 5 days. I only took 4 pills because the 5th one would have been the morning of my surgery. During my surgery he found a small hernia which he repaired. I hope everything goes good for you. After your surgery just make sure you keep your Fluid intake up. I got dehydrated and almost had to go back to the hospital. I was only able to swallow about a tablespoon of liquid at a time. Your little tummy will be swollen inside, but that will go down in time. Don't drink too fast. I can't believe that my surgery was 5 months ago. I feel wonderful and still can't eat much at my meals. I only eat between 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup each meal.

I can't wait to get mine over with. I'm nervous about anesthesia! I go on 1/2/15.

I was awake for mine. I was given numbing throat spray only.

Have to say it wasn't such a bad experience. I think the more you work yourself up over it, the harder it is.

Gagged a few times but didn't feel like I was choking like past people I spoke to.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
