food addiction + band = ????

Hello!

I'm writing here because I have nowhere else to voice this concern and know that someone can understand fully where I am coming from. I have found great support, knowledge, and advice on this forum, and I am so grateful!

I am addicted to food. No doubts about it, I could never in a million years deny this. The bigger, the better. The jucier, the better. the greasier, the better...And portion size? HUGE. I think about food all day, and I think I would trade my left hand for a bag of doritos if were the only way I could get them! It hit the level of "obsession" in middle school, and hasn't stopped growing since then! I am always filled with a gnawing hunger that is in no way physical, and in every way psychological. But before I can even go ahead and realize I am feeding my emotions with food, I am halfway finished with the afore mentioned bag of doritos! Obsession? Yes. Compulsion? oh hell yes!

I have my pre-op appointments set up for next month, and I cannot help but wonder if my addiction to food is going to make it so that I'm either not allowed to get the band, or if I do get the band, if it will be able to help me. I plan on attending both group support sessions and also private counseling throughout my entire journey. I was just wondering what people's experiences with this are. Was anyone out there able to overcome their addiction to food by using the band as a tool? What was this like for you???

I'm sorry, I know this is a long, vauge post, I just feel so distressed about this! help!

I was banded in March 2006 and prior to this had been a total food addict for about 6 years. I was very much aware of the emotional issues that I was feeding, but I didn't have any desire to go into

Yes this whole experience has been quite a lesson for me as far as personal responsibility and dealing with my eating issues. To me it's kind of like any other issue, If you are a recovered alchohilic you are STILL an alcholic. For me, I'm a fat girl and when I finish loosing all my weight I'll still be a fat girl. I like to eat, and that's all there is to it. Learning how to contol it with the band is an experience, Ive been banded since 02-16 and I still have a ways to go. I've lost 20 lbs, lots of inches, and it's easy to get frustrated. This morning, I was trying to eat some pancakes and I simply could not get but amlost just 1 of them down. I did not want to eat 3/4 of a pancake. I wanted both of them, not becasue I was necessarily hungry but because i wanted more of the delecious pancake flavor. The band is a reality check and that's seriously what I need. Just keep reminding yourself of your goal. It makes it a lot easier. It does take time, but give yourself time. You'll be glad you did it

Hi , Just joined and I'm hoping to get banded next month. Reading your post is like reading my life story! My main concern is also that I will continue to crave food and my old habits (i.e. I don't eat because i'm hungry!) will not be overcome. It's good to read that so many of you have the same fears and indeed have overcome them. I am having this surgery in Ireland and it's relatively new here so there's not much of a choice when it comes to surgeons , not sure if thats a good thing or not! Anyone else had surgery in Dublin??

Just make sure you mainly eat protein. That really helps with the hunger, and takes cravings away. Then, make sure you stay on top of your fills. You will still be hungry or think you are hungry, if you don't get a fill.
