Need a little advice, support, or wake up call….

My date is July 7th.. i have been reading on this forum for several months for hours at a time.. trying to be informed..

My choice has been to tell 2 people so far..

Suddenly i have had a close relative, who i have not told... talking to me about the dangers of WLS.. and how I can do this .. She has not asked me outright if I am having it….

So now i have been looking at the complication board for hours WOW.. needless to say , a part of me is saying, what the heck am i thinking, i could die or have lifelong problems….

I think i am so concerned over what everyone will think or say.. that I am freaking myself out about something that I feel will be a great tool…

but on the other hand has possibilities of severe complications….

Am I the only one with these second thoughts?

I look at it this way...staying obese has a long list of risks associated with it whereas WLS has a much, much shorter list of risks associated with it. You've got to decide for yourself where you are comfortable with the risks. For me, I'm more comfortable with the surgery than I am with staying obese. Best of luck to you.

I agree with the above statement what us more important to you what others say or think or your tight to be healthy and prolong your life. If you do MIT have the surgery you are facing a lifetime of illness and a shorter life or you can decide to become healthy. Good luck my friend. But you deserve to be healthy and do not owe anyone an explanation .

No, you are not crazy. If you are, then I am also. My date is July 28th, I'm in the middle of a divorce and am basically a single parent to a developmentally disabled daughter who is the light of my life. I think about all of the possible complications, read about the experiences of people who have had tremendous challenges after surgery and it scares me to think that I may be putting my life at risk.

Then I remember that my life is already at risk- with hypertension, pre diabetes and all of the lesser problems that come with obesity. The writing's on the wall, do something effective or the chance of severe, life threatening illness is pretty high.

I have a good surgeon, with a great team in place. The odds of a serious complication are pretty low- that's why I've seen every "ologist" in the world and been tested extensively. Is it a guarantee of safety-well, no-but I feel that it is a step I'm ready and willing to take to try and regain my health and improve my life.

You're not crazy, this is a big deal and if you weren't apprehensive then you weren't well infomed. I wish you peace in your decision and know that you are far from alone in these feelings. Only you know if this is the right choice for you.

You are not crazy. I think most everyone who has undergone WLS has had second, third, and probably fourth thoughts lol. For me the dangers of surgery versus the dangers of being obese, with Diabetes Type II, and possibly now hypertension....I think the odds are pretty good for the surgery winning out over staying obese. It is a choice each individual has to make for themselves. You need to make the decision that feels right to you :)

For me I could not lose all of it on my own my highest weight was 480 I got town to 430 on my own . Could not get past 430. Every time I did I shot back up to 430 .

I got tired of going up and down with my weight .i use to weigh 220 . I was hit head on in 91 and shot up to 484 fast . So getting in the gym was very hard to do . I chose the lap band first mainly cause insurance , and it went good .

I lost 100 pounds on it but it was slipping and well the removed it in 3 months of putting it in .

They put it back in cause I was scared of the by pass but I did not lose any weight after they stuck it back and it was slipping agin .

So I went in to see dr suh and we revised it to the sleeve I am just 3 weeks out I had surg on may 30 I have lost close to 30 pounds so far .

I seem to be constipated but I don't eat much

.

I had bad heart burn a week after surg and I had to end up mixing the Pepcid with nexium twice a day and it seems to work . Other then that I am not hungry .

I just start cardio at the gym a week ago .

But I am excited I was scared but I was getting to the point where I was walking worse everything was getting harder to do .

And I just got tired I can do it on my own and keep it off . I think this is a great tool to get you down so you can maintain and feel better it takes work .. The surg is not a walk in the park but it was worth it for me . I am trying to get to 220 back where I was and hope I will keep it off with the new life style I am moving into .

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
