What do you miss most after Weight Loss Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Having surgery changed my life and I am so grateful for my sleeve. But, I do still miss some foods and my diet coke. It's okay to mourn something that gave so much comfort for so many years. I have food issues...I wouldn't have been almost 300lbs and desperate enough for WLS if I didn't. But, a year later I am treating my body kinder. I am learning moderation. I can still have pretty much anything I want. I just want to make better choices now. I also eat my Protein, exercise and drink my Water. On occasion, I will enjoy a taste or two of a dessert or something special. I just don't binge eat anymore.

I too miss gulping Water when I'm thirsty. I can only drink water mid day so I drink about 2 bottles, sometimes 3 if I can get it in.

This is my main concern! I love gulping water, especially before bed or after exercise. I'm also going to start practicing not drinking while I eat. :)

Like the others, I really miss gulping Water. It is funny, I didn't realize that drinking a lot of ice cold Water would be the one thing that I would miss the most, but it is. I used to be a diet coke drinker...one can a day, but that wasn't hard to give up.

Another thing....I used to not like salads at all, but now, they are very tasty!

I've always been able to gulp cold Water. Still can.

I have to amend my very first post in the thread. We have season tickets to the Colorado Rockies and went to the game today. I miss foot long hot dogs smothered in mustard and peppers :(

I have to agree I really really miss gulping down Water. It takes sooooo long to drink water. I love ice cold water. But sipping doesn't satisfy me. Do we ever get to gulp down water?

sure. I do not know what, why or how I went from sipping to gulping after VSG. It definitely got easier to drink a lot of water after 1 year. I have found it is much easier to drink flavored water fast than straight tap or bottled water. It could have something to do with the flavor changing the surface level tension of the water (eg. Making it easier to process internally). So two things:1. Wait a year until mostly healed and 2. Flavor your water for easier drinking. I do not track how much water I drink, but would guess it is around 9 x 32 oz a day. One thing to keep in mind is the kidney can only process about 32 oz an hour (+- a few oz), so drinking more than that rate will take several hours to expel. If you are a big drinker (I am), plan accordingly so you aren't needing to use that bathroom (possibly multiple times) and not have one around. Happened to me all the time earlier on. :)

Gulping down cold, chilled Water on a hot summer day is what I miss the most....

Bufflehead-this is exactly what I'm wondering about. I'm pre-op. I don't drink alcohol "alot", but love champagne. I know carbonation is bad and understand why. What are the "rules" around wine etc. down the line post op? Thanks.

This is going to sound really odd but I like sleeping in on the weekends. Twice now I have slept so long that I end up feeling really dehydrated.

When I'm at work I have to have so.ethung to sip on all day. But at home I just have been forgetting.

I guess I miss being able to skip drinking Water without feeling like crap. But I will adjust. Its good for me anyway.

Funny how it's not missing food, it's missing being able to stay hydrated without constantly drinking water!

I miss hamburgers the most. I could eat them everyday for every meal. I'm 7 weeks post op and I generally just miss real food. Still working on adding solids in to my soft food diet and it's hard. I'm not very good at gauging what I can handle. I've lost 35 lbs though and that is worth missing out a few burgers!

Gulping down a lot of Water whenever I feel like it

I miss guzzling Water sooooooo bad! I have a 100 oz mug used purely for water and I could go through 2 of those in a day! Now I can barely get 32 oz down. It's not as satisfying when you have to sip it :/

What is with all the sipping! Unless u are fairly newly sleeved u should be able to drink Water fairly normally with the exception of guzzling your water. I and i know of many more that take a good drink everytime. So if ur new hang in there. You will have to test urself every so often til u drink what u can handle in one hit. Good luck

The only thing I really miss is eating alot of food - like at Thanksgiving or at a buffet. While at a buffet, I'm jealous (but at the same time disgusted) watching people eat plates and plates of food, while I'm pushing the plate away at about 8 bites.

At the same time, however, I'm so happy that I can stop at 8 bites. It's weird, I'm proud that I don't have to eat till I bust but I'm also a little jealous. Does that make sense to anyone?

I don't miss any 1 specific food cuz I still eat everything (and yes, I take 1 sip off hubbys diet soda about once a month when we go out). 1 sip once a month isn't going to hurt anything. And I'm not really interested in it any other time. While I don't miss soda much, I guess I do miss my Corona Lite. I drank about 2-3 a week. Haven't had a beer since 2009.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
