talking to young children

Recommended Posts

I have a tentitive month for my surgery and need to talk to my kids - my daughter is 6 1/2 and my son is almost 4 - we eat healthy foods already - but my portion sizes will change. Any advise will be appreciated from those with small children have done this.

Thank you,

Helena

My daughter is five. We talked about how I'm eating better nutrition now. I did NOT tell her I had surgery because I was fat. I just told her my tummy wasn't working right and the surgery was to fix it. I don't want her to focus on body image or size issues. You know? You'll also not be able to pick them up...so sharing you're having surgery is important.

It wasn't that big a deal aside from her telling her entire preschool class I had surgery and wanting to show them my scar by pulling on my top. Also she was concerned when I transitioned from mushies to solids, like you can't eat that! I was surprised how little it actually impacted on her world.

Really just know there are no secrets, they will tell someone. :omg:

Well, I don't have children so I can't offer any "parental" advice; however, obviously it's up to you if you even explain that you're having surgery. As far as explaining what you're eating...are you sure they'll even notice that it's different? Now the pre-op and post-op diets will be drastically different but it's for a short time but later on when you're back to regular food...well, I'm not sure it'll look "odd" to them. You'll still be eating regular food just in normal to small portions.

So, if you decide to talk to them about it, which I think is very sweet. I'd suggest telling them that your health is important to you and you are going to start making sure you are eating good, healthy food so that you can be the best mommy possible!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
