Questions about diet after surgery...

Recommended Posts

I'm about 5 months post surgery and feel like I'm doing well. But I'm curious about what people are eating day to day. I have found that carbs (rice, crackers, Pasta, etc) just don't work for me. I can't explain it really, suffice to say that I eat rice, and I don't feel well. I'm mostly sticking to Protein, fruits, veggies some dairy. For some reason I am craving candy, which I never did PREsurgery. I'm not sure where that is coming from really. I'd like to get myself on some kind of actual plan. While, I'll reach out to the nutritionist at my doctor's practice and see what she suggests.

How many calories are you guys averaging?

I am also 5 months out. Currently I am at 1100 calories a day. A little less on days I don't work out or exercise. I am able to get a good sensation of fullness by making sure I eat enough dense Proteins, 3 meals a day with 2 Snacks. At my NUT's suggestion, I have recently upped the amount of carbs I eat to 60-80 per day to incorporate more multi grains. I needed the carbs for energy. I have made a personal choice not to eat potatoes, rice, Pasta or Desserts.

I have found a Peanut Butter cup, made by Quest, that has 20 grams of Protein per serving. The taste is excellent.

I'm at about 900-1100 calories per day. I'm trying for at least 85 grams of Protein - my carbs are in the 50-60 range. i stopped logging my intake a couple of months ago and realized I was snacking too much, so I'm back to tracking now.

I still do at least one shake per day - they don't fill me up like they used to, so I need to add some bulk with low glycemic berries and frozen greek yogurt (not a lot, just a couple of tablespoons to thicken). I find the shakes cut my urge for sweet stuff.

It sounds like you are right on track. I don't eat refined carbs either. But I do get carbs from fruit and Beans. I eat either Greek yogurt or a scrambled egg for Breakfast. lunch either chili, chicken Soup or a chicken breast on top of greens. dinner I eat what I make for the family but not the starch. So if I make them turkey burgers, for example, I just eat the patty and Tomato. If I have an evening snack it is usually fruit or string cheese. I often supplement with a Protein Shake if I'm low. I average about 900-1100 cal per day, 90 G Protein and 40 g carb. I've lost 130 pounds and am 6 pounds from my personal goal.

I am 6 months out and I average about 500-800 calories per day, depending on what I eat. Most days my breakfast is plain greek yogurt with a bit of splenda mixed in, morning snack is 1/2 cup of 2% milk in my coffee, lunch is between 100-150 calories, dinner is around 150-200 calories. There are some days that I will add in another snack like a Protein shake or another yogurt if I need to up my Protein. I average 65g protein, 25g fat and 20g carbs for the day.

In terms of what I eat: greek yogurt sweetened with splenda, 2% milk (only 1/2 cup per day), boneless skinless chicken thighs, very lean ground beef, low-fat cheeses and dairy products (cottage cheese, sour cream, etc), and sometimes fish when the prices aren't too high, as well as one serving per day of raw fruit and at least one serving of steamed veg, such as broccoli, cauliflower, or salad.

I know a lot of people will say that my calories are too low, but my nutritionist is very happy with how I'm eating, and told me not to go over 800 until I'm closer to a year. I also keep my portions to 1/2 cup or less of everything except yogurt, which I eat 2/3 cup of. :)

Be careful! That candy craving took over about 1 1/2 years out . Since nothing made me sick, I began eating loads of candy every day and gained back 60% within a year. I have been revised for a month to the RNY so I cannot eat candy ever again! When I was on the wagon I used Livestrong's My plate to track everything I ate & was told to stay under 1000 per day but you should really ask your Nutritionist what is right for you, your height, age and ideal weight. Calorie goals can vary by person...

Thanks all! @@Heather B I will def watch the candy. The trick is to not have any at all. Not in the house etc. I think I'm doing ok. I just need to create a plan and keep to it. I feel as though I need more structure.

What is it with sweets after the sleeve?!?! I too went through a chocolate kick for a few months until I noticed I gained 7 pounds! I never craved sweets before! I had to kick it to the curb.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
