Overeating before pre-op diet common?

Recommended Posts

I am so happy everyone is being so honest and not judgmental! My surgery will be in July, so I had been afraid to post about my overeating so far out. Well, I continue to overeat, I'm not happy about it but I know myself, and my mind sees this as the real finale on a lifetime of dieting - it's the king of all binges because this is truly the last, last time! YEAH!!!

July is just very far away which is hard!

I do have a short list of rules - no matter what I do:

1. I cannot gain more weight,

2. I cannot DIE (very important bc I don't want to have a heart attack or something crazy!!! From all the junk food)

3. I must eat 5 fruit and/or vegetable servings a day. Preferably fresh and organic. This includes fruit smoothie, (counts as 2 servings) carrot celery juice, (counts as 2 servings) etc. (this goes with the I "can't die" part - it helps me feel physically better and to digest and deal with foods that are fried or very fatty otherwise i feel SOOOOOooo much more sick.)

This overeating is no surprise to me. it is to be so expected for me, if it weren't i wouldn't need this surgery to get my life back!!

Thank you everyone!!!

Hugs!

I think for me, it was saying goodbye to food that I should consciously avoid in future (I didn't have food funerals for the healthy options in my life that I will start eventually) Things like the fried rice, the tempura-fried veggies from the sushi restaurant...things I know I will need to make an effort to stay away from. I have actually found healthy recipes on several sites for my favorite take-out foods (I'm a Chinese food freak), so I know it will be back sooner or later...just without the large quantities of carbs that used to kill me.

Sadly, my eating had already changed so drastically during the six months leading into the liquid diet that the food funerals honestly made me a little sick :/

I am on day 3 of my pre-op diet. My surgery is Monday June 2. I have 2 Protein shakes a day plus 1 frozen Protein rich meal for dinner. I am struggling. I actually feel sick. I am shaky and weak feeling along with a headache. I also have been taking my multi-Vitamin. I am trying to focus on the big picture and the amazing outcome but it's been hard! Reading these blogs have been inspirational. Thank you to everyone for sharing!

I felt terrible the first couple days of the liquid diet. By the third of fourth day, I was doing pretty good though. It gets better if you just persevere through it :)

I am struggling with my pre-surgery eating too. I've reduced my caffeine intake significantly and I am trying to stay away from total junk but it is tough! I have started drinking a Protein shake first thing in the morning, which does seem to help me stay on track during the first few hours of the day. The afternoon is a whole other story...

I really apprciate everyones feedback. I was so feeling isolated in this. It had not so much to do with a last supper type thing, and more to do with really turning to food to quell anxiety. Then overeating (because I felt bad, or it is a pattern,or it is "Tuesday," or the sky is blue...) then feeling horrible and food hungover every day - then going right back to behavior that makes me feel horrible - and not just "stopping." I get the addiction component to my behaviors with food - I have been struggling my whole life and always doing something to try to remedy this - as the physical and emotional consequences suck! I get the surgery is not a magic wand at all. It is a tool that I am looking forward too give me a stop-gap and leverage to get past a point in my life that I have been struggling to get past for about 3 years since this LAST round of massive wight gain...

Again I thank you so much for your chiming in - as this not only helped me but others as well I am sure! Best wishes to everyone on your journey... :)

As for me, eating has always been an "emotion" thing but also a way of life. I laugh when I think back on a comment my husband made years ago. He asked me if I was going to make dinner. I responded by asking him if he was hungry. He said, "well no, but it is 6:00." Ha. So you see, I ate even when I was not hungry and not emotional. So now going forward I will tell him to go to a restaurant at 6:00 if he thinks he needs to eat. :-)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
