New York City vacation recommendations

Recommended Posts

I will be going to NYC for 4 days about 2.5 months after my surgery. Does anyone have any good suggestions of restaurants where I will be able to find something I can eat, but will allow my non-op sister to still get the full NY experience? Thanks!

There's a great place in the village called Sacred Chow. They are vegan, but the food they make is absolutely ah-mazing! You can get your Protein in and your sister will love the food, too.

Also look for Schawarma places. If you're not familiar with that, its a roast, shredded meat (usually lamb or chicken) in a sandwich, but they will gladly serve it to you without bread. Top with tahini or hummus and an Israeli salad (cucumbers and tomatoes) on the side and it is fabulous.

Seafood is always a safe choice as well. Steamed crab legs are really low in calories and high in Protein, so you can feel free to have a little bit of butter with them.

To be honest, I don't think you really have to look for specific places. The amount you can eat is so small as long as you choose things from the menus wisely you should be OK. I have eaten out regularly since my surgery and it hasn't harmed me any. Just keep the same food rules eating out that you would at home: protein and produce before carbs and crap. Most restaurants are more than happy to accommodate items for you. :)

OMG! Walk around Little Italy! We will restaurant hop. By the time you get out here, all the shops will have tables out on the street. We get an appetizer people watch and then move on to the next one. There are endless choices. And pretty much every choice will be absolutely amazing. You will want to remember each and every one of them but it gets overwhelming

OK, so do you want quality or touristy? Not that you can't have both but alot of the best restaurants are not well known outside of the city. As you know, it's Protein first, veggies and then carbs so I would say you should stick with places that can offer you and your sister that option.

FYI, I am banded, my sister is not, and we eat out together all the time. If you want great fish, Oceana is terrific as is most Greek restaurants. Fresh and simply grilled. You can't beat it. If you can tolerate meat, one of the most iconic steak houses is The Old Homestead. The meat is top notch and it reeks of 'old New York'. If you want to step into a time warp, Spice Market in The Meatpacking District is amazing. Like you've walked into a 1930's Shanghai bar. The food is terrific as well...especially the cod. If you want small plates...tapas...Alta on West 10th St. in the West Village is the place. This way you and sis can share a few items. The brussel sprouts is to die for...and so is the Sangria...lol.

If you want something like pastrami or corned beef, Carnegie Deli is OK but Katz's on the Lower East Side is better and really iconic as well. Just know that the meat is very sodium laden and you will have Water weight gain for sure.

I agree that Chinatown and Little Italy are places you should explore and as long as you eat sensibly, you will be fine. Everyone who visits Chinatown should experience a Dim Sum Palace. It's amazing....

If you like 'ethnic' food, I can recommend Turkish, Russian, Italian, Mexican, Spanish...even more exotic like Ethiopian and Afghan restaurants as well. Just let me know how adventurous you are.

Feel free to PM with any questions you may have. As Lisa notes...I live here in the city and know it very well. I can recommend restaurants and sightseeing options as well.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
