What to bring for surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I go in tomorrow morning at 5:45am for my sleeve surgery. I'm very excited! I should be only staying for one night. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on what I should bring to the hospital for an overnight bag? Are pj's pointless? I thought maybe some toiletries and a book and cell phone charger might do it. Is there anything you wish you has brought but didn't?

I thought I would use all the stuff you mention - pjs, cell phone, book, etc etc.

The only things I used were lip balm and a heating pad. I didn't change out of my hospital clothes until I went home.

I slept most of the time I was there and the nausea was so bad for me I couldn't concentrate on a book or even look at my phone. Everyone is different and some on here have no pain or nausea..

They gave me a toothbrush and paste so i didn't even need that.

Good Luck!!!

I used my phone (not my iPad), Chapstick and my own pillow from home. That's about it. I totally overpacked!

Bring an extension cord for your chargers.

Yes!! I wish I had thought of that! Honestly the only thing I really used were my phone and a change of underpants. Most of the time I was too groggy/thirsty to concentrate on anything for more than maybe a minute. But I was only in the hospital for 24 hours, discharged about 18 hours after surgery.

I will say one thing..you will probably feel fantastic when you are still on the pain med drip. I felt good until about three hours after they took me off; heck I practically skipped out of the hospital I felt so good! It wasn't until I got in the car with all the jiggling that it got painful. So if you have a small travel pillow you can use to hold against your belly for the car ride home, it really helps!

Thank you everyone for the great advice! Did anyone have a sore throat after the surgery?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
