Surgery June 4th...worrying I'll regret my decision. Any regrets about VSG?

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for surgery June 4th. I honestly thought this day would never come. After 4 years, I have a surgery date. One of my biggest fears is feeling sick after surgery (after healing). Many times people feel bad or a just stay sick. My other fear is..will I regret this? Any tips or past experience would be very helpful.

I did go through a couple of days where I said what the heck was I thinking but 1 1/2 months out. I have no regrets. I had sme nausea next day after only due to gas in my stomach. I am down around 40 lbs. You will not regret this. Energy, smaller clothes and satifaction.

My 1st week post-op I went through the, "What the Hell did I do to myself!" phase. But on day 8 or 9, everything got better and I've never regretted it for a minute. It was the best decision of my life and I'd go through every minute of it again without hesitation.

I just has the gastrectomy portion of DS (reverse staged procedure) in early March. I think that the only thing I "regret" per se is how much smaller my stomach is/how little it holds now. My weight loss has not been as rapid as other people here though so I am sure that if I were enjoying huge losses, I would feel happier about the whole thing. (I've lost 20 lbs over 10 weeks). The other thing I have found is that I am forced to no longer eat for comfort. I also avoid carbs like the plague since bread, rice, and Pasta all fill me up REALLY quickly (3-4 bites, max) and having DS, I need to get in a lot more Protein to survive. So basically, you need to find better "fixes" for comfort -- I've gotten my nails or hair done, gone for a walk, read a good book, talked to a friend, etc. But I can still find that it is still difficult in social settings. Over the weekend, for instance, I wanted to have a slice of pizza and could not finish a piece. Granted, I should not be eating pizza at all but once in a while, I want to be able to have those things and do not want to feel like I am going to throw up if I have one slice (especially since this was a relatively small size and not the large sized slices that a place like Sbarro sells).

Anyway, I don't mean to sound like the Debbie Downer here but I just wanted to be honest. I don't regret having the gastrectomy portion of the surgery at all, but I do get frustrated with how little I can eat at times. I also know that my stomach size is going to increase down the road in any case so I am learning to live with this.

(As a side note, be sure to discuss your stomach size with your surgeon. Mine decided to give me a 50 bougie pouch without discussing it with me. He typically does 60 bougie pouches for DS patients -- and this is what I was told I was getting in the general info session -- but decided to be more aggressive with me because of how much I had to lose. My understanding is that a lot of VSG patients get smaller pouches since they do not have the malabsorption to aid in their weight loss).

Lap-band is reversible so if you regret it, it can be undone.

I will be 6 months out this week...my only regret is that I didn't have the surgery sooner.

My life is so much better now - my blood pressure is down, I am no longer on the verge of diabetes, I no longer have low-grade headaches every morning, I no longer have joint pain, I am not tired all the time, I feel more attractive to my husband, I am no longer embarrassed...I could go on, but you get the point.

This is a life-changing decision and waffling back and forth is totally normal. I did as well - I must have changed my mind 100 times between August, 2013 and November, 2013. I have had moments of "What did I do to myself!" I have had fleeting moments of "maybe this wasn't the right thing to do". I have moments of frustration that I can't eat more or faster or drink faster. Again, those moments are fleeting - doing those things helped me get to my high weight of 256 pounds.

Only you will know if you're ready. You're going thru a process - it's completely normal. Do your research, network with people on sites like this.

You got this! Best of luck to you.

I completely understand what you are going through. I will say this: even with my frustrations and slower-than-most weight loss, I would still have the surgery today. Just the fact that I have gone from 310 to 256 from the switch surgery (May of 2013) til today has made a world of difference for me and made me feel so much better. Feel free to PM me if you would like!

I also no longer have diabetes (was very borderline for years) or GERD! Diabetes gets reversed in 98% of DS patients.

I like to Celebrate each and every "decade" of weight loss (e.g. Getting into the 260s, the 250s, etc.)

My surgery is June 4 too. I have days when I'm scared and days I can't wait for it. But I know we can do this, and it will be worth it.

Have you ever wondered if too much information is not a good thing. Ha.... No, I understand that all the advice and info we get from books, articles, and most importantly from the first hand knowledge that we get from sites like this one is very helpful....but.....I just read a bunch of posts here under surgery complications. I gotta tell ya they scared the crap out of me. My surgery is scheduled mid June, and I too am going from excited to petrified...every two minutes, back and forth. Having full knowledge of things that can go wrong is good...I think, but it does make me wonder if being overweight is as bad as what some of the post op patients are going through. Are these rare or the norm? I had thought a few weeks of discomfort is to be expected, and nausea, gas pain, difficulty getting in all the required Fluid are all parts of the recoup process. But man, the complications can be extremely serious and life changing. Makes me worry that I am headed down a yellow brick road that may not lead me to OZ! I too do not want to be a Debbie Downer, but really, I am now stuck on scared and not moving back to feeling excited nearly as quick!

If you're that scared then don't do it.

I will discuss with my dr when I see him for my final visit before surgery. I am going to show him some of the posts and ask him how he would handle each of the specific complications.... Sounds like some of the examples are more due to poor followup care then the actual complication itself. A good dr with strong follow through is essential. I think I will know where he stands by how he reacts to my questions.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
