June 2007 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Thanks mhuffman! That was nice!

Well Toni, I'm afraid my liquid diet is just that. My pre-op diet is my usual stuff til one week before (which is this upcoming Friday!!!) On Friday I will be on Clear Liquids only for a week. Clear liquids are anything that you can see through that is liquid at room temp. (sodas, popsicles, Jello, broth, grape juice, etc.) Full liquids are anything that is liquid at room temp, but you don't have to be able to see through it (ice cream, creamy Soups, orange juice, shakes, and all clear stuff too). Sometimes you can have pudding, but it's not officially on the liquid diet.

There are never any meats, veggies, REAL food on a liquid diet. OMG, I guess 10 years of nursing has paid off! I actually have a clue about something!! woohoo!!

My doc sometimes requires full liquids 2 wks before and clears the last week, but he let me slide! Possibly because my BMI is 35 with no comorbidities... but Probably because he has to see me everyday and knows I would shoot him if I was on liquids for 2 weeks! :)

This ends the last weekend of my life to eat in excess, and I'm a little sad. Don't get me wrong.. I want to look good again more than anything in this world. But I have a love/hate relationship with food. It's the reason I've missed out on a lot in life, but yet it's always been there for me! Again, I know my "comfort" with food is a lie. Nevertheless, I am comforted by it, and I'll miss it. Does anybody else feel this way? Anybody else a lil sad?

Heather,

It seems that I have allowed food to interfer with my life since I was a little girl. I am so excited to have this surgery and not be so obssessed with what I will be eating next.

Heather, thanks so much! It looks great. Is there any way to locate it for easy access? It looks so far that June 1, 6, and 7 are busy days for all of us. I keep up with the Virginia bandsters too, is anyone in June from the Washington DC area( includes MD and VA)? I think I remember Suzzie being one! It would be nice to get together with some people at some point.

Janine

Janine, were you talking about me? I live in Kansas City MO.

ANYWAY... I LOVE the calander! Can you update and re-post it when we get more dates? Cause I know I am still waiting for my date. I'm REALLY hoping that they will call me TOMORROW with a date!

Hi again!!!

Toni, my pre-op diet is 3 Optifast Meal Replacements a day (either Protein shake/soup/mousse or protein bar) for 2 weeks. You can also have up to 2 cups of leafy green veges a day (so stirfry or salad). I thought that it was really tough but reading about the poor people who can only have clear liquids I feel quite lucky really!!!

Starting the excercise programme is difficult for some reason but it really is addictive and it stops you thinking about food when doing the pre-op!!! I find that it is much easier to go on the treadmill first thing in the morning and to pump up juice TV/MTV as it helps to keep you going! I also find that walking with a friend who is fitter than you is a good way to keep motivated and keep trying to be faster! After reading many of the posts here I have also learned that if you excercise the weight comes off a lot quicker and since my husband and I have a romantic weekend booked for the end of June I am very keen to loose as much as possible before then :-)

Heather, I too love food (I also love alcohol... socially of course), I eat when I'm happy, sad, indifferent... my favourite thing in the whole world is having dinner and drinks with friends so I often wonder why I'm doing this and if I'll be able to cope! But honestly as much as I love those things, I hate being fat more. I literally haven't been out in six months because I'm soooo uncomfortable in my own skin... I just keep thinking about how much I also love clothes, makeup, jewellery, shoes... and generally getting dressed up and feeling good about myself... bring it on!!!!

One of my other bad habits is diet coke... never thought that I could give it up in a million years... haven't touched one for 4 days so feeling very empowered!!! Small steps, one at a time.... heee heee!!!

Hi Junies,

I disappear for a few days and look what happens while I'm gone! The calendar is great, it's nice to see all of us in one place!

Good luck to everyone on the 2 week liquid diet I keep hearing about. I'm supposed to be on a high-protein diet and I am following it pretty well, but not 100%. I'm going to have 4 days of liquids before the surgery and I think that is going to be very difficult. I can't imagine 2 full weeks!

I hope everyone has a great week and remember: June is approaching swiftly!

Well Toni, I'm afraid my liquid diet is just that.

There are never any meats, veggies, REAL food on a liquid diet. OMG, I guess 10 years of nursing has paid off! I actually have a clue about something!! woohoo!!

What I meant, Hotty, was are all liquid pre-op diets modified, like mine??? (Because words like "clears" were confusing to me) Thanks for letting me know. I realize we're on all sorts of different diets now.

----Toni

Wow, KT, those are my favorites, too! Eating out with friends and diet coke....especially dc from a fountain! I'm worried how they will go until I went to a support group with a bunch of banded women and it was a dinner meeting at a mexican restaurant! They were all eating chips and salsa, had iced tea or Water, and ordered from the appetizer menu or a-la-carte. It was really cool! One lady got a HUGE taco salad and just put what she didn't eat in a to-go box.

Another thing I think I'll miss like crazy, though, is drinking while eating. I'm sure it'll get easier as time goes by, but it will be tough on my at first.

And yes, Hotty, I'm really going to enjoy my few days left of "old" eating. And I'm going to miss them----like crazy. I already have my last meal planned at one of my fave restaurants! But we all have so much to look forward to!!!! Now pass the little powdered donettes (Just kidding!)

Hugs,

Toni

You can take the ? off my June 6 date on the graph because I'm ready to roll on that day. I'm not at all disappointed that I have to wait another week ('cept for the liquid diet thing) because I need to get things organised a bit better at work and at home. Hi to everyone who welcomed me/commented. What a month we're all going to have! I'm hoping the early Junesters will give advice to the rest of us. You are the pioneers.

The not drinking with meals thing is my #1 concern too. I only ever drink Water but I gulp down a huge bottle of the stuff with every meal. I'm determined to do this right but that's certainly going to be a hurdle for me (takes a huge gulp of water).

I'm concerned about the no-drinking-during-meals, too. I've been trying to not do it now and it's very difficult. Hopefully after 4 weeks of ONLY liquids, we will be so sick of them that we will want to enjoy our solid food without them!

WOW!!! This board is HOPPIN!!!!

Heather - Thank you SO much for the calendar!!!!! It's a GREAT way to keep up with everyone.

I see a lot of pre-op diet talk going on. For me, starting Friday, I am a FULL liquid diet until the 31st in which I am on clear liquids (no red). So I'll be living on Advantage shakes and strained soups/broths. I'm kinda looking forward to it because it's like "the home stretch". I thought I would dread it...but as of now, I'm good with it....let's see how I'm feeling when I'm on it tho!! haha!!!

One thing I AM dreading about the day of surgery is...my surgery is scheduled for 2pm and I can't have anything to eat/drink after midnight the night before! That's a LONG time to go without Water and I'm afraid I'll get really thirsty!!! Guess I'll be staying up to midnight the night before, drinking my little heart out! :)

Call me a masochist, but I might just try a day or two of liquid diet while on Pre-op just so I can commiserate!

MM...I love your ticker! What a neat way to watch the days disappear until BAND-DAY!

Anyone considering Vitamins? Centrum chewables or something else? Just wondering. I have taken prenatals religiously just because Dr. Oz (Oprah's guest Dr.) said they're the best in his book....YOU an Owners Manual. Just want to be sure I get the best chewable-bang for my buck! And I guess chew them up after Breakfast like normally? (time-wise) Is that your plan? I'm actually looking forward to the Viactiv for Calcium. I think costco has a cheaper knock-off.

Cheers!

I Love food, it is my friend

I Hate food, it is not my friend

I love food, it makes me happy.

I hate food, it makes me feel sad.

<O:p</O:p

I love food, it provides comfort.

I hate food, it causes more stress.

<O:p</O:p

I love food, it helps me be social.

I hate food, it makes me stay inside.

<O:p</O:p

I love food, it says you care.

I hate food, it doesn’t care.

<O:p</O:p

I love food, it gives me energy.

I hate food, it makes me tired all the time.

<O:p</O:p

I love food, it is always there for me.

I hate food, it is always on my mind.

<O:p</O:p

Do I have a love/hate relationship with food – YES. I hope to trade that relationship for something much better with my band. I am sad that my old way of eating is going away, but I have to believe my new life will be better than anything I have ever eaten. I will no longer describe my self as having a relationship with food. I need it for energy; nothing more and nothing less. My relationships are with people, not with food.

<O:p</O:p

Now if I can just get there!

I had been thinking about those things and thought I would post. I am not looking forward to my pre-op diets (4 Protein shakes/day and SF clear liquids for 2 weeks), but if I can't handle that, then why am I getting the band? My husband has done amazingly well on it - he even gave up his daily 64oz Diet Dr. Pepper from QuikTrip. He lost 8lbs in the first week. I will be interested to see what he lost this week, when he goes in for surgery on Thursday.

Heather - thanks for calendar - I love it. Hopefully someone will join me on the 14th.

I'm freaked out about not drinking while eating too. That's gonna be the big one for me.

I had a Diet Coke thing, but I replaced it with those "to go flavored powders" you put in Water. The Crystal Light things, but I buy the Walmart ones, they're just as good and a little cheaper. I used to drink 5-8 Diet Cokes per day, now I replace it with those to go things. Hits the spot for me.

I hope the drinking-while-eating thing will be as easy, but we'll see.

I feel for those of you who have to go on the two weeks of liquids pre-op. I have to do 5 days.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket. I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to. And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
