June 2007 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

I'm baaack...from vacation on the coast and back among the living (almost) after coming down with the flu that immediately went to pneumonia. Doc gave me and bunch of stuff to take and today is the first day I've started to get bored hanging out in the bed. My silly little band is playing tricks on me today by not letting me eat. At least I can get pills down.

On vacation I learned I could eat little, not enjoy more than about 3 bites of nice seafood dinners (protein first, then veggies, then carbs) and walk my butt off on the beach and *still not lose! When mentioning my plateau to my doc she wants to test my thyroid again. It was low last time on January 06. She was also talking about a new med for diabetes called Byetta.

I'm glad everyone is doing well!! It's pretty quiet though.

Wow Rhonda, sorry you've been sick!! Hope you feel better soon!

As for a plateau - I'm there with you! I'm getting pissed off about it too! Grrrrrrrrr!

O2B - Sorry to hear you've been sick. And to top it off, you can't eat! UGH! Hey...go for the Byetta! I was basically plateaued FOREVER, and started Byetta injections about two weeks ago and have lost a TON. I won't say how much because people will FREAK OUT because it sounds like too much. It even says on the paperwork included with the medicine that weight loss is NOT a reason to adjust the medication. There are two strengths...5mg and 10mg...I'm on the 5mg so far and LOVING IT!

I must say that my plateau has also been busted big time over the past few weeks. Now I just got a fill last week, it's dropping even more.

I was so happy as I'd lost almost nothing for 2 or 3 months. I thought I'd reached the end of my major weight loss.

Hang in there. I'm sure it's a natural thing as a lot of us are going through it at just the same time.

Hey CHECK IT OUT Stef, I didn't know you had diabetes. Not that it's a good thing. I'm hoping my A1C is in normal range without the metformin I haven't been taking. Thanks for letting me know how the Byetta has worked for you. My doc suggested it for control of the blood sugar AND said it would help with the weight loss. I know my whole battle is the insulin resistance thing. THANK YOU!! I am starting to think there may be hope for me. I don't want to be one of those people who say the band doesn't work, but when my doc asked me if I was glad I got the band, I paused......I didn't know what to say. I told her the jury was still out. I want to be excited about this and be successful, and if I wanted to starve myself I wouldn't have gotten the band. I'm as filled as far as I want to be right now.....things like this flu have gotten me too tight to eat Protein and solids (haven't tried salad yet Suzz) so I don't think I want any more.

Suzz, I'm sorry you're plateaued too. Are you still wearing your Body Bugg? I stopped wearing mine at Christmas and wish I hadn't. My counting went all to heck. I need to get back to trying for those 3000 points in walking.

I have insulin resistence, though I'm not diabetic... maybe I can talk my doc into the byetta? Lol.

I haven't worn my bugg for about a week. I have a dry skin rash on my arm where I wear it. I tried just moving it up or down or on the other arm and it's just not comfortable there. I'm fickle. But yeah, as soon as the rash is gone I'll put it back on.

(My whole body is a big dry skin rash! This winter is KILLING my skin!!)

I'm debating making an appointment to get a fill. I've been toying with the same weight +-a few pounds for the last month or so....It's like my body is resisting going into onderland....THE DEVIL IS A LIE!!! MY WEIGHT WILL START WITH A 1--- just thought I'd vent and yell!!! LOL

Suze, you could very well get Byetta, if you wanted. You don't have to be diabetic to take it. O2B, I'm not diabetic...my doc prescribed it strictly for the weight loss properties. It does sound like there are a lot of us hitting a plateau at the same time. Weird. My plateau was much longer than any of yours that I am aware of...five freaking months, with almost no weight loss to show for it. (At least simple scale numbers. Body fat loss vs. muscle gain...I wish I knew my exact numbers.)

Steph- Did your regular doc or lapband doc prescribe the Byetta? You say it was strictly for the weight loss, you have no blood sugar problems. I'm just surprised for some reason, I don't know if mine would go for it or not.

It was my regular doc. He handles a lot of sports medicine, also...but is a family doc. He prescribed it before getting any bloodwork results back. I was a little surprised myself, but it is working great and apparently is being prescribed more and more for this purpose. I was really taken aback on giving myself injections, but wow is it ever a piece of cake.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
