Hows the internet/cell service in Mexico?

I was wondering about the Marriot and if they had free WiFi? Also is cell service international since youre so close to the US? I want to stay in touch with my family every step of the way. Thanks

Howdy, I was at the Marriott in early March and the wifi worked well. I also purchased an international plan for a month with ATT for around $40. Lately I've also seen commercials for an app called Line which claims to allow free international texting and phone calls. Happy trails!

Ooops, and yes the wifi was free.

I went to Mexico last week and find out that you can download an app called magic jack to your phone and call home for free once you hook up to Marriott internet. You can also download viper and that make calls free but for viper you must have who you want to call download it also. These two apps calls by using the internet so it's free. They both worked fine for me.

The second you cross the border, you are on international rates. I was there in December and the Marriott and OCC had free wifi (as did the Starbuck's up by Walmart) I turned my phone to airplane mode so I wouldn't have to pay for incoming text messages. I used Skype, FaceTime, iMessages and email (all free via wifi) to communicate.

I second the Magic Jack app!! My son broke his iphone and has been using his itouch ipod with the Magic Jack app as a phone. Works great!
