FurEllie, I am with you!!! I had mine done by Dr. Ortiz on Jan 29th...down 55 so far and I don't have a single complaint. I do think for newbies though, there might not be enough communication as to the minute by minute expectations, especially for the ones that go alone. Outside of that....next to God!!

I am currently talking with Carolyn with Dr. Ortiz's office. She seems

very nice and informative. I have also talked with Dr. Rumbaut's office

and they are great....Does anyone want to comment on either of these

surgeons?

From my previous post:

I had Dr. Ortiz and it was an AWESOME experience. From the drivers (if you're really lucky, you'll have Mama Ortiz, the Dr's Mother, drive you around TJ), to the office staff, to all the doctors, to the nurses - everyone is WONDERFUL. The clinic is spotless, you're up and walking around within a couple of hours, the rooms are incredible and the hotel staff feels like they are going to throw their coats down for you when you walk in!

I went to TJ for the surgery and have been back 3 times for 2 fills and an unfill. 100% professional and even though it takes me 2 complete days, it's worth it for me to go there for fills.

I can't say enough good things about OCC :(

Dr. Ortiz has a message board too: Lap Band Forum (Powered by Invision Power Board)

I've been there 4 times in 2.5 months :clap2:

Hello, I had my surgery 4/9/07 w/Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. Wonderful work and people are swell. I paid $8200 and that includes 1 night hotel, 2 nights hospital w/extra bed for companion. Also...includes free fills for life w/fluroscope (sp?) but the hospital charges about $80. Had my first fill yesterday. I lost 15 pounds the first 5 weeks. I am 70 yoa. Feeling great, back to aerobics, etc., BUT...my friend's husband went at the same time and that guy has lost 32 pounds!!! figures huh? jb

I went with Rumbaut and had a WONDERFUL experience. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I've found a great doctor to do my fills here, but I still plan on returning to Mexico in a year or so just to check in. The whole office is exceptional. Highly recommend.

I was wondering if any one has went to a doctor in mexico for their surgery? Can you let me know how everything went? I have read up alot on Dr Rumbaut, and he sounds like he has done many surgerys and is a very good doctor. I am self pay per my insurance will not cover my surgery, but the surgeon here charges 16500.00 and thats a big loan for us to take out now, so I am tring to collect as much infomation as I can to see whats the safest and cheapest.

Who does your fills in the states? How much do they cost? We just got back from a fill with Dr. Rumbaut's team and it was WONDERFUL...but it sure would be nice not to have to take three days of traveling! That is my ONLY complaint...everything else was excellent!

Who did your fill in Dr. Rumbaut's office?

I found my doctor through fillcentersusa.com.

I paid $155 for the fill and $75 for fluoro.

Good luck!

Dr. Lizcelly did our fills.

Which fillcenterusa did you go to? I have heard nightmarish stuff about some of the locations, but others seem to be really good.

I went to Dr.Lopez Corvala surgery went excellent I also was a self pay patient and it was 7500.00. But the only down fall is tryen to find a doctor in your immediate area that will do the fills behind one of the mexican doctors.I live in saint louis and I travel all the way to chicago to get my fills. That's the closest dr. that will do the fills behind a mexican dr.

My 7500.00 included 2 days in the hospital and 2 days at a very nice hotel. Dr. Lopez teaches a lot of US Doctors and you get 1 year of free fills. But the down fall to that is if you don't live in or around San Diego you still have to pay to get there.

I'm new to the forum, but have already decided that Mexico is the way for me to go. I'm going to have to self pay, which is still goign to be difficult because my credit sucks, but i'm hoping to get my mother to co-sign a loan for me.

Anyway, I found a Dr. Jose Rodriguez located in Acuna, Mexico, that charges $7750. You just have to get to San Antonio and they pick you up there and drive you about 2.5 hours to Acuna, which is just across the border from Del Rio, TX. Since, I live in Houston, getting to San Antonio is easy.

My question is has anyone had their procedure done by this doctor?

Michael,I am also fairly new to this site but what I can tell you is that I have decided to go to Dr.Ortiz in TJ. I have literally done hundreds of hours of research on most of the Drs in Mx including calling a lot of the boards they belong to for info. I am confident that I am making the right choice. Don't go to someone because they are cheap, make your decision on the person who has the experience. Dr.Ortiz does charge 8500.00 not including airfare, for me airfare will be another 400.00 from st.louis,mo. I plan on having my surgery in August as long as money works out, I have credit issues too. I'm trying to get an equity loan.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
