I am one more night away from surgery...May 5th. I am in Southern California and I have been pursuing the surgery since 2008. Can't believe I am actually a day away. My insurance and medical group required 32 weeks worth of classes and support groups. It was a 3 hour round trip at least once a week but I made it! I am having the bypass and will be kept for a minimum of 48 hours. I am so thankful for this site and to all of you who share your stories. Thanks to you all! Keep sharing and I hope we can continue to help one another through the ups and downs. God Bless You All...

Best of luck to you! I'll be thinking about you tomorrow.

Hi Everyone!! Day 4 of liquid diet almost done!!!! I have a 14 day pre-op diet. It's not that bad and I'm on total liquids with no food at all. I never thought I could do this but it's true that everyday it gets easier!

Tomorrow I'll be in the single digits till surgery. I'm sooo excited but not nervous.

For all those on your pre-op diets hold on and don't cheat your new life is just around the corner!!!

Today is day 1 of the pre-op diet. Oh my goodness, I am SO. HUNGRY. I keep telling myself it's for a good cause, but I can't stop thinking about being hungry. :(

My surgery is May 13th. I just ordered all my Vitamins through dietdirect.com and I also ordered biotin! I'm petrified about losing my hair, other than that I feel pretty good about the whole process.

I am the 13th too!

halfbella, the only thing I can think of is to keep yourself busy during those times. Can you not drink any other liquids Water, fruit2O, crystal light, etc? To keep the brain occupied is the way I am going. If you do that maybe those hours in between your meal times won't seem as bad. Just a thought,

Well I had my pre-op appointment and all is good to go on the 22nd. Yay! Maintained the exact same weight for the last month. The PA came in to talk with me and should looked at the wrong file and then my weight and thought I gained a load of weight then realized what she did after asked me what I did to myself. I was like huh? I'm pretty sure I'm the exact weight as last time, she looked again and was embarrassed and was like yeah you're good...lol whew had me sweatin' for a moment!

Anyways, I start my diet on the 11th, some food with my liquids so that's good. On the 21st I will have Clear Liquids only and nothing after midnight. Surgery is not until 1:30 but I'm to be there a few hours earlier in case they can get me in a head of time.

Got to visit the hospital part that day and there is a beautiful view of the Willis Tower (for all us Illinois people The Sears Tower..lol) I can't get use to that yet.

The biggest obstacle I now have is my Vitamins. Went to Vitamin Shoppe and found a liquid "fruit punch" flavor multi Vitamin. Might as well call it "poo punch" because it smells, tastes, and looks horrible! I don't think I can bare to try again. It gave me a horrible after taste for hours. Burping it up was the worst. Ew!

Got my surgery date last week, May 19th. Don't have a time yet. My pre-op class is tomorrow. I have no idea what they will be covering. They sent a bunch of information in the mail regarding foods to eat on the pre-op diet and what to eat for the first 6 weeks post-op, from pure liquid the first two weeks to mush the 5th & 6th weeks.

I only have a 3 day liquid diet before surgery, but my surgeon put me on a high Protein low carbohydrate diet when I saw her on April 15th. She wanted me to lose 10 pounds before surgery. I've lost 15 so far. I think I will be ok on the liquid diet as long as I keep my mind busy and don't dwell on what I can't have.

I am going to be increasing my gym time this week and next since I won't be able to do my weight training for a few weeks after surgery.

I can't believe it is less than two weeks away. I have been thinking about having this surgery for nearly 15 years. Ever since my husband had it done in Nov. 2009. Now it's almost here and I am excited, nervous, and scared. Is this really the right thing to do? But I know that I have tried everything else and I am still obese. I want my life back more than I am worried about the surgery and its long term consequences.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
