Thanks! I start the pre-op diet on Tuesday. The diet I was given doesn't seem nearly as strict as some of the others I've read about here. Congrats on quitting smoking! I quit ten months ago and feel great. :)I got some Protein Drinks yesterday to try out, but that's it.

Oh ok cool. I started my pre-op diet today and today wasn't too bad. Hubby and kids had pizza for dinner and I did laundry while they ate, so I did good through that and I really wasn't too hungry today. I feel like I really just have to take one day at a time and not think about the whole 14 days.

Thanks for the congrats and congrats to you too!

My diet is pretty strict with only 5 Protein Shakes a day, sf Jello, Water, zero calorie flavored water, broth, and two sf Popsicle per day. I just had the shakes, jello and water today. What's your diet like?

3 Protein shakes, oatmeal and a dairy (yogurt or light cheese) and unsweetened applesauce for breakfast... lunch and dinner I can have lean chicken, turkey, or fish, strained Soup, another dairy or applesauce, and sf jello, sf ff pudding, or sf Popsicle. I think I'll get really bored with it but I'm really hoping the protein shakes will help keep me full.

Met w/ surgeon yesterday and now and it's really starting to sink in my head that this is really gonna happen.

Surgery date is May 12th (yep, I chose a Monday) and finished Day 5 of my pre-surgery diet. My surgeon's pre-op diet is 2 weeks

The pre-op diet's not as bad as I thought it would be but I was imagining the worst  .... 2 Protein Shakes to replace 2 meals and 1 meal must consist of 4oz of Protein & 1/2 cup of approved veggies. Bought a food scale but worried yesterday I ate a little more than 4oz of baked chicken....Hope I didn't mess up too bad but it was only about 1 oz more.. Just fretting.. Don't want any issues on surgery day.

Back on track today but not more slips (hopefully) between now and surgery day

Mine consists of two Protein Shakes a day and a 200-350 calorie meal (usually I do lean cuisine) and a vegetable salad. I'm a snacker so not having something to nibble in while reading is sometimes difficult but I'm doing pretty good so far. 2 days before surgery I go to an all liquid

Good luck to you Laydee! I'm right behind you on the 16th!!!! I'm super excited. Yesterday when I started my pre-op diet it started sinking in for me too. Its starting to feel surreal for me. While we were driving yesterday, I kept seeing fast food restaurants and I never really paid attention at how many but I was looking at them and saying this is really it, it's really gonna happen!!!!

Since we are so close we should keep in touch!

Wow, you guys get to have at least a little food! Lol not me pure liquids until puréed stage. That like a whole month! But hey you've all come this far and I'm sure it wasnt easy getting here (at least not for me it took 9 months).

What day is your surgery?

Wow!!! We're really in the same boat....It seems like as soon as I started my pre-op meals every Fast food place purposely opened their doors so the scents can whiff out. Even the grocery stor (Jewel Foods) was cooking fried chicken in deli section..... :o

At least having a small 1 meal helps but Dr. said to measure the amounts.... so easy to nibble more but we're too close now to screw up at the end.... Biggest fear..Dr said if the liver is not shrunk enough, he will close a patient back up and reschedule the surgery.. IF the insurance would pay for it.. and they usually don't. Who wants to chance that? :(

Defin. keep in touch!!! I see you're scheduled on Friday (5/16).. Mines in Monday (5/12) so (God-willing) I'll be home, up and about walking by then... GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!! :D

Good Morning, May Groupies. My surgery is Monday morning at 7:30. I'm very excited. Getting all the last minute stuff done this weekend and 2 more days on the pre-op diet. I've lost 14 lbs so far. Weight loss has slowed these last couple of days, but I'm happy with the 14 lbs. I don't know about you, but I didn't think the pre-op diet was so bad. Mine was 2 weeks of 3-4 Protein Shakes, s/f Jello, broth, s/f popsicles. I mainly stuck with the Protein shakes and the broth. I was surprised at how good I feel with only about 500 calories a day. Only occasionally have I felt really hungry....other times it was just head hunger. I won't lie.....I did a lot of 'mental' work before I started the diet and I think that helped a lot.

I'm anxious to see you on the losers' bench. Good Luck everyone!!!

I did a bad thing I was upset cos my daughter was very nasty to me she has no sympathy for my fear or difficulties with pre op diet etc cos she says I brought it all upon myself - I fell into terrible depression so went and bought a Box of fudge and some shortbread biscuits and ate the lot :-( my op is Tuesday morning - I feel bad and very alone with no friends or family support - I have no family other than my daughter and my friends are in Australia :'( And im in England - I hope I haven't messed up my op by eating bad things.

Bridget, have you been seeing a psychologist? I've found that my continued visits have helped with my anxiety from certain family members disapproval.

I am also having my surgery May 13th. I am in CA. I am almost a week into the pre op diet right now. I bought bariatric vitamins through Celebrate Vitamins. Multi with Iron included and Calcium. A little more expensive than non bariatric, but very complete and simple. Other use Bariatric Advantage. It is a little more expensive but also good. Every dr has a different opinion of what vitamins are needed. I have kaiser permanente and we had 12 weeks of classes on what to do before and after the surgery. My dr recommends less vitamins than kaiser does.

NiaSia:

That's what my pre-op diet is as well. Start mine on May 10th with surgery on the 20th.

Like you, I'm trying to take it one phase at a time! I'm a planner so this is a little difficult but there is so much to think about that I have forced myself to take it one step at a time and "trust the process".

Good luck!!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
