so confused and upset at week 2 with weight loss

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 3/4, I'm 2 weeks out now.
I weigh myself only on Mondays. Last Monday at 1 week a post op I was 244lbs, and Today at week 2 after surgery again 244lbs the same no change.

In addition since last monday, I have been going to the gym everyday burning 450-500 calories on treadmil.

I've been on liquid diet, drinking non fat greek yogurt drinks (approx 80gram Protein and 220 calories daily).

Need some advice before I go crazy.

Your body's in shock. You just had major surgery that included altering your internal anatomy. It takes time for your body to catch up to your program. Follow your plan and it will happen.

To be honest, the best advice anyone ever gave me was to stop exercising. Our calorie deficits are large enough without putting stress on the body on purpose. Once I stopped, my weight loss has fallen into a steady pattern of 3 pounds per week with no stalls. Go for light walks once in awhile, but give your body time to heal and adjust before you stress it out more. :)

you are still healing, which means your tummy and area around it is swollen. You are probably retaining Fluid which makes you retain a few pounds. Give it a few days and you will notice a big drop. It is way too early to panic. You are going to lose... be patient.

I had surgery the same day u did. I came home from the hospital weighing 16lbs more than I did the day of surgery due to all the IV fluids. I was 236 DOS, 252 day of hospital d/c and at 2 wks out I am 221. I have been on liquid diet w some puréed food but I really haven't eaten much. I am really struggling to get my Protein and fluids in so congrats to u!!!! The one thing that struck me about what u wrote is all the exercise u are doing. I haven't even been cleared to exercise yet, see my surgeon Wednesday for 2 wk postop. Just today I went to the gym for the first time and just walked the treadmill at 2.5 for 30 min. Just be careful and I'm wondering if the extra exercise and few calories being taken in could actually be working against u. Well I wish u only the best of luck! This sure is a bit of a challenge to figure out, isn't it!!???

Going to the gym 2weeks after surgery? Have you checked this with your surgeon or bariatric team?

From my readings, most surgeons seem to advise 6-8 weeks no gym or heavy exercise. I appreciate walking on a treadmill might not be heavy work, but still worth checking with your doctor.

My surgeon said treadmill, and elliptical were fine for me, but no weight lifting.

I had my surgery the same day as you and I'm in the same boat. I lost 12 pounds in the 3 days in the hospital and nothing since I've been home. I know everyone says "your body is healing" but it is still so discouraging. I will continue to follow the program, but I want to see the scale move downward. This was a major decision to have this surgery. I keep thinking that I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what it is. As usual, I blame myself, which probably got me to where I am today! I will continue to believe that it will change and I hope you do to!

Hang in there. I just had my post surgery appt with my PA today and I got the green light to start full exercise in one week, which will be 2.5 weeks post surgery. She said walking and light cardio is okay now, so you're not doing anything my PA said wasn't okay. Hang in there and don't give up

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
