Wow!!! I had Surgery a week ago today, and I'm on Straight Clear Liquids for 2 Weeks, then Full liquids for 2 Weeks, then Mushies for 1 Week! I'm jealous you get to have applesauce, Maltomeal, your Doc isn't a strick as mine. But I really haven't found myself Starving yet. I was going to try Creamy Soups to, but have you looked at how much Sodium is that stuff?! Even in broth is outragous!

Good luck to you, and glad your feeling better :)

Rocko~~

Pre-Op liquid Diet (3/13/07 - 2 weeks) 341lbs.

Surgery Day (3/27) 322lbs

Today (4/3) 311

It's so interesting to see what you guys are eating... I'm getting banded on Monday. So, let me get this clear (and I probably should review my pre-op info packet), is everyone generally sticking to CLEAR liquids after surgery?

I've been making a list in my head of liquids I figure I'll have. Please tell me if you think I'm nuts:

shakes from Myoplex & Slim Fast

Butternut Squash Bisque & Creamy Tomato Soup from Trader Joe's

Lime juice bars from Trader Joe's (no fruit chunks!)

Crystal Lite/Water/Flat Soda

Gravy

Just kidding about the gravy. But does the rest sound ok? Or am I bonkers?

What you'[re feeling is pure physiological hunger--don't let anyone tell you it's all in your head. Your body is telling you it is starving. Drink Protein Shakes or add Protein to your preferred beverage. Good luck ! It isn't easy...I'm post-op day 15 !

There is so much variation is what doctors recommend. mine is a week on clear a week on creamy/mushie, then solids. I took it upon myself to short it from week to 5 days. I know my body well enough to listen to it and the clear liquids weren't cutting it. so I moved up to creamy. I simply can not tolerate the Protein Shakes. They go right through me, and I saw no logic in saying well it's ok if you have creamy Protein shakes, but you can't have a more healthy Soup of the same consistency. I agree with Rocko on the sodium, hence we make our own. You get a lot of protein from homemade stock made from bones, I know alot of people like the fast losing that comes from putting your body into ketosis and depriving it of carbs, but I'm not one of them. Some carbs are necessary, especially for mental clarity. So I just go slow and eat healty, and creamy liquids. I did add hummus yesterday, I'm only consuming about 750 calories a day thus far, but I'm full, and content. Tomato basil soup is wonderful, as is split pea soup. Dh purees them real smooth and fine, so they slide down. Cottage cheese and hummus are also great. Eaten slowly and chewed well for the CC. I don't like all the additives in prepared foods and I don't tolerate High Fructose Corn Syrup, Splenda, and protein powers, they just make me more gassy, and uncomfortable. I think just eating healthy and natural is much better for a person. Listen to your bodies.. (except when it screams out for chocolate).... That's my .02

I am shocked at the amount of people drinking anything other than clear liquids for the first week. I only allowed Water for the first 48 hours and clear fluids for the rest of the week. Then thin fluids for the following week. I was not hungry until my 2nd week of solid food (which I am on right now).

To me it is about listening to your body, Don't force things you can't eat. and what you do consume, do so in moderation. I didn't get banded to starve myself thin, I got banded to help me know when to stop eating, and so that I eat in moderation. I notice that alot of people see getting banded as fast weight loss and shock thier bodies into a state of ketosis, which while it makes you lose weight fast, it isn't very healthy or wise. The body needs carbs and fats in small degree, to function properly. I quickly progressed from clear liquids to creamy and to my own blended shakes, as it is more an issue with particulate matter hanging up in the band, then liquid matter. I can't tolerate the Protein shakes such as ensure and slimfast, and I just can't stand to put all those chemical in me.

I'm eating mushies right now, but it doesn't mean I'm eating bland. Tonight we are having mashed sweet potatoes, homemade applesauce, and creamed spinach. The rest of the family is also going to enjoy stuffed rabbit. I may have a bite or two, depending on how tender the meat turns out. I had one bite of chopped BBQ last night, I had to chew forever but it went down without problem, the key for me is how big the bite.

I was banded on 3/29. That evening in the hospital (a few hours after they did an upper GI to check for leaks, and started me on ice water), I was given applesauce and yogurt (about 2 oz of each). I didn't eat it, but in the morning they brought me cream of wheat and applesauce. They told me the really wanted me to eat it if I wanted to go home that day.

It's interesting how different the docs are. But the main thing is to do what YOUR doc says.

That upper GI post-surgery was the worst thing I went through, I believe. The Fluid I had to drink was completely AWFUL. The reason was that it was Fluid capable of being resorbed by my body, if in fact there was a leak in the esophogus or stomach. Simply nasty. I guess I am lucky if that was the worst part of my experience!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
