Self-control!?

Recommended Posts

I've worked in an office for 5 years and am the senior person in the office. We just hired a new person and she's started bringing in candy that sits right outside of my office door. This is a temptation that I have avoided bringing in to the office for years. She too is quite overweight and we are in a "Biggest Loser" competition together at work. I asked her to to refrain from bringing certain types of candy (since I wasn't going to ask that she stop all together since it makes her happy) because they are trigger foods for me. I feel like she was receptive, but others in the office seem to have other opinions on the issue. The words "self-control" were thrown around.

Now, I currently have a failed Lap Band and will get the sleeve on April 9th, so I am having to really work hard to eat small portions and stay away from certain foods. It's just hurtful when someone diminishes my feelings and makes me feel like my issue is simply a lack of self-control. I have self-control because if I didn't I'd already have eaten myself into a grave. I fight everyday and lost nearly 100 pounds with my band at one point. It's just a challenge being surrounded by your drug of choice and I feel like it's unnecessary in my office. Am I the only one that feels this way? I guess I just want support from my co-workers. Mind you, they don't know I have ever had WLS since I don't want to deal with the judgment or having to explain why I chose WLS to help me get healthy. Anyway, I'm just venting. I'll be walking out of my office with my eyes closed all day. B) Getting in the sleeve mindset. Thanks for listening/reading.

Good luck!! You can do this. In a couple weeks you'll be able to turn down any candy cause it's not worth the space in your sleeve. I also understand temptation at work. We bake fresh Cookies for our patients and Peanut Butter cookies are my weakness. I'm glad to say I haven't had a cookie since the second of December!! My coworkers know about my surgery and still would offer me candy and treats. Some people just don't get it.

Self-control is an overused insult. How dare they say that to you!!! You are so right when you say that this type of food is your drug of choice. I know my drug of choice is anything salty/crunchy, namely chips. Thankfully, that is not typically the type of food that people bring to an office.

And good for you for asking your co-worker to limit what she brings in. Ask and ye shall receive, with any luck. Remember, if anyone is saying you are weak or are being judgmental of you, they will soon be intimidated by your amazing weight loss and strength. :)

I personally feel they shouldn't have to stop because you have a hard time with those items. That's not there fault I could understand if it was your husband who is always trying to bring crap around. But really other people at work have there own choices. I know it may be hard but you just have to stick your ground and not pick up that candy. The end picture is much better then that candy. Good luck.

i know its so hard and somedays its just harder then other to NOT give into our favorite foods. I find temptation in my own home sometimes. Im not sleeved yet, but i do have a family and children and they do like goodies. I buy icecream and treats for school and stuff. i have to choose to not eat them. of course i dont buy potatoe chips...thats my biggest trigger...

You could say health and safety have discovered mice or suspect mice on the premises and as a consequence, ALL foodstuffs need to be retained in cupboards and locked draws for the foreseeable future.

it'd get it out of your face.

Maybe I'm a bit oldskool here, but you're in an office. Not a pantry party. Having foodstuffs lying around willy-nilly is not the way to go. If they want it - put it in your desk - your own assigned space. Or better still - in a fridge.

The woman who is bringing it in is only dishing them out to salve her own guilt from chowing down on them.

Just my thoughts on the matter....

I agree with Hynita.. It would be a perfect world if we could ask and expect everyone to help us but it just isnt like that.. You can control what you have in your own home and you can control what you reach for and put in your mouth.. That is about it.. I always dread it when i see a coworker has brought in something. Either I eat it or I dont but I can not ask them to not bring in the treats..

If you log everything you eat and do not go over your daily calories /carbs you will soon find it easier to resist those foods that are bad for you. They swallow up the calories and you are left with no calories left to eat and you are hungry.. :) Log eveything you put in your mouth.. You will find it very enlightening!

I agree, that's why I did not ask her to stop bringing in candy. We have food in and out of the office all of the time. I just asked that woman to woman and growing friend to friend, that she not bring in the type of candy that she did because it is a trigger for me. Like most people that work a full-time job, I spend most of my my waking hours at work. There is a 5 pound tub of Red Vines sitting right outside of my office door. I get that it's up to me to resist temptation, but I did not get WLS because resisting is easy. I definitely agree that the weight loss is much better than the candy, but I don't think it's unreasonable to ask not to be surrounded by it in my office. It's an unnecessary stressor, but I guess to each her own. I appreciate the cheers of good luck. I can use all that I can get. ;)

I agree. It is very hard working on an office where people are always bringing Snacks, candy and enough of the birthday cakes. It's like that Seinfield episode when Elaine wants to loose weight and it's always someone else's birthday and she tries to boycott and they treat her like she is unsociable. food is and has always been social pressure. It's hard to just participate in the socialization without the food. But we try to sometimes we fail. We just have to try to focus on the future and on our longevity. Good luck to us all on our journey.

I think it was absolutely ok for you to ask her to limit the types of candy, to help you out. It's a shame others have taken the liberty of commenting negatively on what should have stayed between the two of you.

Perhaps the candy could be moved to another location, so it's not such a constant trial for you? If that doesn't work, you might find that in your efforts to hurry past it you're becoming clumsy and <gasp> bumping into it and knocking it to the floor! Horrors! If that happens often enough she might decide a different location would be better...

If I had an abundance of self control I wouldn't have needed the sleeve!

I too worked in an office where there was candy around ALL THE TIME! And, regardless of my feelings, there were so many people who would eat it that it just didn't matter to them. Personally, I brought in Protein bars that I really liked (I just got some Quest Bars - chocolate chip cookie dough). I ate them super slow and by the time I was finished with a bar, I didn't even want the candy.

Keep in mind that this will always happen to you. There will always be something that you want right in front of you. You won't be able to stay away from it. Maybe, go ahead and take one of the candies, take a bite and throw the rest away. Just because it's there and you want some doesn't mean you have to eat the entire thing. Now, if you're doing that with 5 of them per day that may be a different issue, lol! But, if you really want one and can't get your mind off of it, wait until much later in the day, take one, take a bite, and throw it away. You'll get your satisfaction without eating the entire thing.

Good luck! You can do this!!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
