Anyone have an issue with Sucralose/Splenda?

Recommended Posts

Hello All!

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this same issue...

When I was pre-op, i could not handle Splenda...always gave me the 'runs'!! For both pre-op and post-op, I've been enjoying the Isopure Protein liquids from GNC, but noticed especially post-op that I had terrible diarrhea. I checked the label, and found that they are made with Sucralose, which is indeed Splenda! Now I'm noticing that almost all Protein shakes, Protein Bars, and liquid and chewable vitamins contain Sucralose...having a hard time finding non-Sucralose products...anyone else having this issue?? I'd certainly appreciate your input!!

I also had problems with it pre op. I have been dieting for years and learned a while back that splenda was not my friend. Immediately causes me headaches, bloating, intestinal discomfort... just miserable. I pretty much don't eat any sweets, because the fake sweeteners seem worse on my body than the real deal.

I also relied post op on Isopure Protein drinks and had the same symptoms you describe. I haven't started by Vitamin regiment yet, so I'll have to look at that closely.

Sorry, I don't have any great advice, but I can assure you that you are not alone.

You might just be recovering and since you're drinking nothing but fluids, well...only fluids are coming out? Also I have read many people get the runs from plain whey Protein and switch to whey Protein isolate or just wait it out untill the body adjusts. I had a weird side effect from splenda after heavily using it for a while (diet candy, diet ice cream, diet soda, I was in splenda overload!) In that the ligaments in my wrists where very painful. I didn't equate it at first with the splenda and almost had to give up my favorite thing in life (I'm a guitar player). I then read someone else having problems similar to mine from Splenda and I quit all manner of ingesting it. I have not had the problem since and even occasionally eat something with splenda in it. I have since been very alert to artificial sweeteners and only buy protien powders with steviea in them such as nectar naturals or Pure Protein. It's worth a try. I also used to binge on diet soda with aspertame and always had Migraine issues, so I stopped diet sodas (a very hard thing to do actually) and the Migraines stopped. Also think about a whey protein isolate. My daughter had problems with regular whey and gas/diahrea and it seemed to work for her as it did others on message boards. Good luck!

Oh, yeah, another Protein powder that is and isolate and sweetened with stevia is Jay Robb. Not very sweet so I added more stevia, but fairly good tasting.

Try making your own Protein drinks out of Greek yogurt... one cup equals over 20g of Protein. Hopefully you are not lactose intolerant. Splenda isn't good for us anyway. Another suggestion... I stumbled upon a product called Hemp Protein High Fiber powder made by Nutiva (got it at Wegmans grocery store).... you can put that in your shake too (has 11g of protein AND 12g of Fiber in 3 tablespoons).

P.S. Frozen organic berries, Kale or Spinach in those shakes are GREAT!! If you put greens in your shake I recommend using a dash of cinnamon to cut the bitterness.

Funny you should say that, Pegsboard, I recently have been having a problem with my left wrist... thought it might me carpel tunnel acting up...but it could be because of all the Splenda I consume... I may buy some Stevia and see if there is a difference... thanks for the info!

I can't tolerate sucralose either and a lot is coming out now about ill effects including Migraines, digestive problems, insulin issues, etc. All still very controversial because of the huge market (China manufacturers it very cheaply) and people are addicted to diet soda, diet pudding, diet everything. Now I'm having so little food I definitely want it to be real food, not test tube manufactured. There are a lot of good Protein Shakes made without sucralose. Steevia, a plant-based sweetener, is something to look for but make sure it is 100% Steevia as there are blends. Vitamin Shoppe on-lime has a lot of shakes to choose from -- or check out your local health food store. It's possible to buy single serving packets to try different brands and find what you like.

About time uses 7 ingredients or less and you can pronounce every one of them. It's the #1 my nut recommends.

Through research, I see that the Optimum Nutrition brand that GNC sells has no Sucralose... And they also have a few different flavors. Has anyone tried those?

Wow, me too! 25 grams of Protein and 100 calories is pretty amazing -- no artificial sweeteners, lactose & gluten free. Thank you so much. SuperFab, I wish I had your nutritionist. Mine recommends a pre-op shake I wouldn't use to clean my car and I felt like I had to really negotiate to use something healthier. Then she told me her kids don't eat Breakfast. Nutritionist? Hello! The coup de grace (however you spell that) was when she announced my weight in front of my husband. I had successfully concealed that for twenty years.

Wow. Yeah, my guy does not know my weight. I totally feel where you're coming from.

There was something making me sick with so many Protein powders and she said at my second visit that her favorite was About Time. I was like "why didn't you tell me this the first visit instead of the second" and she flat out told me the office would rather us try their brands they carry first. Ok, understandable to an extent, but I was still pretty pissed. Lol

I just placed an order with abouttime today...got one of each flavor in the individual packets, to see which one I like best. From there I'll probably go ahead and order the bigger quantities...do you get anything for referrals, SuperFab? If so, let me know so you can get credit for me!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
