My surgery is scheduled!

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I have been participating in a weight loss program with Cherokee Nation Health Services. I have had some success on my own with diet change and exercise, but I have had this sort of success before and then gained it all back and more. Now I'm furthering my weight loss journey and having the gastric sleeve surgery! My surgery is finally scheduled for February 25, 2014! I have been working towards this date since June 2012! I am a nurse and have had a large amount of education pertaining to weight loss surgery. I also have personal experience with weight loss surgery. My mother, aunt, and cousin as well as several close friends have had weight loss surgery, including gastric sleeve surgery. I have a great support system with my family, friends, and my fiance, but more support is always welcome! Thank you for taking time to read my story!

-Lindsey

We moved in to our new house over the weekend and this week! I'm so happy to be in our new home! With all the moving I have not been able to work out like I should. I did get somewhat of a workout lifting boxes and shoveling snow off of our new driveway! I have lost 2 more pounds over the weekend! Just 4 more to go until I am under the required weight for surgery! I love hearing from everyone, especially the Feb. 2014 sleevers! It's nice to hear from people going through the same thing at the same time!

So, today I started the very low calorie diet to help shrink my liver before surgery. I had 3 oz of smoked salmon and 2 egg whites for Breakfast. It's now 11 and I'm feeling hungry, but I think it is mostly psychological. I'm also on my 3rd liter of Water today. My pre-op H&P was cancelled because my surgeon was in emergency surgery. My nurse called me this morning and said we will do the H&P on the day before surgery, same as my appt with anesthesia and last weigh in. Surgery is now less than 2 weeks away and I'm getting very excited! I work at the hospital where the surgery is being performed and I'm excited to have people that I know very well caring for me post-op! I'm also starting to pack my hospital bag! A little early, I know, but I want to be prepared!

Since starting my pre-op diet on Friday I've lost 6 lbs! I'm so excited! It's tough at times, especially at work, but I haven't cheated! Just 5 more days of super low calorie diet and 3 days of clear liquid diet then I get my new tiny stomach pouch!

I'm in the doctor's office now for my pre-op appointment!!! Surgery first thing in the morning! Just a little nervous, mostly because the only medical procedure requiring anesthesia that I've ever had was the pre-op EGD! I've met my pre-op goal weight and I'm ready to go!

Well, it's 1:15 and surgery is in 5 hrs 45 min. I cant sleep. Didn't sleep last night either. Maybe I'm just a little anxious! I have my bag packed by the door. I can't believe this is really happening! If you have a chance, send some good vibes or prayers my way please!

I am out of surgery and finally awake enough (kinda) to post an update! Surgery took a couple hours. My surgeon said that my liver shrank very well and that surgery went great! And no hiatal hernia!!! I have 5 lap sites. I have some aching pain in my belly, but the IV pain meds are working pretty well. The worst part is my mouth and throat are EXTREMELY dry and a little sore. I am allowed ice chips, but I have found that I can get too much for my tummy to take! I'm nodding in and out from exhaustion. I didn't sleep well the past 2 nights. Thank all of you that sent prayers and good vibes!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
