I think I would be less nervous if I knew what the day or surgery was like. I'm petrified about going into the OR alert and having a mask placed on my face (even though I use a full face C-PAP! -- I know I can take that off!). I'm just having anxiety. Help!

You will check in. Eventually a nurse will come and escort you to a pre-op area. I was given a johnny and socks and told to undress completely. I got on the bed (with wheels) and was covered by a blanket. They asked some standard medical questions. They applied a nausea patch behind my ear and inserted an IV. I met with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist. They briefly checked me over and answered questions. When it was time to be wheeled into the ER, I was asked if I'd like some medicine in my IV to calm my nerves. I said "YES!" I remember being wheeled down the hall and my husband kissing my forehead. That's the last thing I remember until I woke up. Never even saw the O.R.

Try not to be nervous--you will be fine. Definitely take the sedative if you need it.

Thanks. I will tell Dr at pre-op tmw that I don't want to see the OR!! Maybe that will help.

My day of surgery was almost identical except...My surgeon's partner had an emergency case and I got bumped. I was at hospital at 8am for 10am surgery, but hung out in pre op until about 2pm! Surprisingly, I really wasn't nervous and actually snoozed some while waiting. I don't think they gave me any sedative ( that I remember) because I do remember being wheeled into the OR, being put on the table, getting everything adjusted and the mask. My problem? Stupid mask smelled like stinky plastic! LOL I remember them saying the anesthesia was going in and I might feel a slight burn, but I never did. Next thing I remember I was waking up (sick) in my room. No recollection of post op/recovery because I had a kind of bad reaction to the anesthesia. But that was me, every one is different. Try not to let nerves rule because the medical staff know what they are doing and you should be treated just fine! Good luck!!

I saw the OR. I was fully awake when they had me slide over on to the operating table and then placed my arms on foam covered extensions to the table so that I had my arms out away from my body. Then I don't remember anything until I was actually in my room.

you can ask them to give you something before going into the OR... so you will be asleep before you see the or... I just had my Lapband removed in Oct....and they told me they were giving me something to relax me.. well the bed moved.. and that is the last I remembered.. I NEVER SAW THE OR....... I did not like that.... I like going into the OR and seeing all who will be in there....I like everone to tell me there names.. as they set you up.. I also bring my own Music to be played... AND I was upset because this OR did not have a CD player.. so MY DOCTOR HAS ASKED ME TO DROP off the Cd.. and he will put it on his IPOD.. and play it for me.. I believe it is my OPERATION.. my MUSIC..it will make things nice for me... mabe you should look at it that way. also..ask your doctor if you could be sleeping before the or.. that will relieve your stress.. Mine was almost exactly the same as this, except I was still awake in the OR and moved myself from the gurney to the table. I wasn't nervous at this point since they gave me versed I think and I was feeling pretty good. They hooked up some stuff and had me breathe into a mask and the anesthesiologist said "here we go" and next thing I remember was waking up in recovery.

I remember my day of surgery like it was today. Once I got there at 5:30 I had to register and was put in a room. The nurse came and admitted me. Then I had a nurse draw blood on me and then I saw the anesthesiologist and he told me everything will be ok. After few minutes my doc came and answered any questions I had. I was changed to a gown in the beginning btw. Then they wheeled me to the OR. That's when I got super nervous I started crying and breathing heavy. The OR nurse was so nice she kept telling me I will be okay but I was nervous because they were putting stuff on me. Since I had heart surgery few years ago I had extra stuff on me and plus they made me nervous when they said leave her left side empty in case something happens with the heart. Then they put the mask on and the nurse told me where I would like to go and I said Fiji and she said ok we are all going to Fiji. I was crying and wanted to tell them to stop and give up but she held my hand and I closed my eyes and pretended she was my mom. I know it's silly but I was so nervous. Idk that I'm 25 haha. That's all I remember and then when I was up I was in a lot of pain but they gave me plenty of medications and I slept most of the day. This is not to scare you but don't think it will be a piece of cake.. Ohh and I had my period but thank god it was my last day so it wasn't bad at all. Good luck to you. Day 2 will be so much better.
