Tricks to drinking enough water?!?

Recommended Posts

I'm pre-op and having so much trouble drinking my Water and I'm worries about getting dehydrated after surgery. I feel like during the Spring and summer I have no problem drinking water but lately it's been such a battle to drink 8 cups of water a day! Any tricks? How do u remember to drink all your water, especially if u r in the office working all day?! Help!!! Lol

I stick to a schedule. At first, it was 1 oz every 15 minutes I was awake. Now that I'm further out, it's one cup before Breakfast, two more cups by lunch, three cups before dinner, and I.5 cups after dinner. The other 1/2 cup comes during the night. I always wake up and have a sip or two of wTer. I count all fluids towards my eight cups, but doctors Cary on what they count as fluids. During the winter, I drink my Water warm to hot because I'm always cold.

Try drinking things other than plain Water. Gatorade, flavored water, etc. Mix it up... it all counts. Also invest in a really great water bottle that you love and always keep it with you.

I am not going to give any advice here. I did no do it. I tried it, my body said CUT THAT OUT, IM DROWNING OVER HERE!! I'm probably the only one person who told my WLS instructors that, that part just aint gonna happen. I'll drink when I'm thirsty, and ended that discussion. Never been dehydrated. but I drink a lot of other things, coffee, tea's, crystal lite, all day long, just not by the gallons like they recommend. just saying. Lots of people panic on this subject. I truly believe that's to much Water for one body to handle. 4 years later I'm still drinking when my body tells me to, I seem to be just fine. but that's me, do what you think is right for you.

I don't force myself but I do tend to give myself more chances to drink and to drink a little more than I would prefer when I do. Like when I am running on the treadmill I try to finish 16 ounces. When I wake up in the night to go to the bathroom I drink a cup. When I take my Vitamins I drink a whole cup instead of just enough to get them down. I have coffee and tea.

I do think it is super important early out though.

I only had to go to the ER once to get IV fluids but it woke me up. Passing out due to dehydration if not fun. I use a pop top little thermos that I bought at Walgreen pharmacy. It holds about 8 ounces with ice in it. I do not like warm Water and see people always at support group drinking warm bottles of water. I need it cold and I also much prefer water with a little flavor. I use Mio in various flavors and just a little squirt goes a long way to helping me down more than enough water a day. Just remember, there is a lot of water in the food we eat also. If you drink coffee, the water in that counts. Don't believe the old wives tale that the coffee is a diuretic and you have to drink another glass of water to make up for the coffee you drank.

I have to confess I use straws. I just can't physically sit at work with an open cup because I'm at a computer. And I hate sucking on those sports bottles like a toddler.

I don't feel like I'm gassy or I'm swallowing air at all.

My NUT actually said straws are okay as long as you're careful (I drank from a straw the other day with no ill effect, but I was taking tiny sips) She said that the no straws is a general guideline because it makes a lot of people uncomfortable, but if you try it and are okay, it's perfectly fine with her. (pretty much echoed what my doctor said when I asked if I would be okay to use my Camelback with a bite-valve on my longer bike rides. He said "Try it, if it works, good. If you're in discomfort, stop)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
