I don't understand the diet before surgery thing...I mean a few days of liquid, yes, but weeks-months? Can someone explain it?

I'm so excited to be this close to surgery. I don't have a date yet. I go back to the surgeon on Jan. 8, 2014. I expect we will set a date then (hopefully). January 29 ends the 3 month "diet" period. So I think I'm looking at surgery in February. :)

My last meeting with the nutritionist is Monday. I'm hoping to know more then.

My last medically supervised diet visit is on Feb 17, 2014. I am hoping to have my surgery mid March.

ReMom13,

The 2 week pre-op liquid diet is to shrink the liver (because a fat person has a fatty liver). Shrinking the liver will make surgery easier because it won't be in the way as much. The 3,6, etc month diet period is a requirement by most insurance companies.

What's everyone's experience with insurance and submitting to them? How long did it take to get a response/approval? I have Cigna insurance. Thanks,

Becky

The first time my paperwork was submitted to insurance was 12/13. Got a call on 12/19 it was denied. I appealed on 12/30. All paperwork was put in the system on 1/2 appealed was approved on 1/6. Surgery is 1/29. My insurance company is Aetna. Best of luck to you!!!!

I have Aetna but I haven't submitted yet. My BMI is 50 and I have several co morbids. I keep thinking that I'll be approved without problems but you're the second one I've seen that was denied first. I will be devastated if I'm declined. Did you have co morbids? What state are you in?

My surgery will be on 2-3-14. I must lose 12 pounds by 1-28-14 or they will reschedule my surgery. My scale is barely moving. Started the Wild Rose detox kit today. Dr. Oz recommended it. Feeling the pressure!!

we have the same surgery date!! Don't lose focus, you can lose those lbs to get approved, drink lots of Water, it helps

Called my insurance company today and I did get approved. I called the surgeon's office and they said that I would receive a date when they received the approval in the mail. Can't wait. I want my date so bad.

Hi Dana! Congrats on getting the approval. It'll come in the mail before you know it mister!! Hang in there and try to stay upbeat and positive. I know the anticipation is sometimes driving us guano. April

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
