January fitness challenge

Recommended Posts

Ok...here we go. A new month....a new year. Time to get off our collective butts and push ourselves a little bit. This isn't about weight loss so much as it's about living/breathing/moving more...feeling better....improving the quality of our life through fitness. Not to mention pushing ourselves to do a little more than we thought we could.

As always....set a goal for yourself. Something that you know will be challenging. State what your goal is....then come back every chance you get to update your progress.

Make your goal something specific and measurable. XXX miles walking/running/cycling/ellipticing/swimming/crossfitting/weightlifting. Or XXX hours working out this month.....XXX times going to the gym this month....whatever you want.

Here's mine....120 miles running and 12,000 meters swimming. Plus I'm doing the pull up challenge every other day, hoping to work my way up to being able to do a pull up sometime soon.

Everybody join in. This is a new year. Exercise and fitness will make you feel better, help you sleep, speed up your metabolism, increase our strength and stamina, lengthen your life....and make you look better naked. Face it, we could all use that. :)

Finally cleared to exercise and so excited! It's been years since I've been active so I'm going to start off a little slow here and see if I can update and increase my goal once I get started. For now I'm pledging 45 miles on the treadmill walking for January.

Great to have you marycontrary.

As for updating your goal.....I should have mentioned that in the original post. It's perfectly ok to modify your goal mid month if circumstances dictate. I don't want anyone to feel hesitant about joining because they might not make goal. I didn't make mine for December. I'm happy to admit that.....because I'm proud of myself for setting an aggressive goal and going for it. So there's no shame in my game.

Life happens. Our bodies don't always cooperate. Not the end of the world. Don't let it derail your fitness progress completely just because there are setbacks. Keep plugging away and modify your goals if necessary. Just don't quit.

I'm 30 days into the 60 days of Insanity so that is my January fitness challenge, to finish Insanity. Also, to do weights at least 5x a week. I actually don't think that Insanity has done anything positive for my body - no really - but my pride won't let me quit!

I'm going to start C25K and stick with it if it kills me! So I will post where I'm at on C25K, lift at least three days per week, and I'm doing a 30 day plank challenge.

I am really having a hard time getting going with exercise. In my younger days I was an athlete. .. 3 years ago, with my weight fluctuating between 240-250 I did Zumba for an hour or more 4-5days times a week, but since then, not much. I thought with my surgery I would be more motivated to exercise, but then I remembered I had surgery on my stomach and not my head... lol

Anyway, I thought after the new year (haha) I would start. BUT I was sitting here tonight, alone, just looking at all my pretty little Zumba dvd's that I purchased over a month ago, and at 10pm I decided I wasn't waiting until the new year! So at 10:10pm on New year's eve I did 40 minutes of Zumba. I feel like I'm gonna die but feel great too. Anyhoo... I WILL do Zumba a minimum of 3 days every week for the entire month of January. I won't commit to more but I will most likely do more, we'll see. I'm a little scared of committing to exercise right now. But to keep myself accountable I will check in when I exercise (in a shorter post, promise). Thanks for letting me ramble:)

Going to follow my 13.1 app (Pink by Zen Labs) plan in order to do a half marathon this spring or summer. It is four days of running and two days of cross-training a week. I have done many 5ks and one 10k this past year, so 1/2 is the next step! I am also a year out this January, so this app was a present to myself to stay focused and hopefully lose that last 20 pounds. I am also planning on running an actual 5 or 10k each month to stay focused on upping my personal record while having fun.

Wellllll, I shall attempt this again...sigh*** did NOT make my goal last month - although I must admit I had a terrible cold/sinus infection for about 2 weeks...I will blame that ????.

Definitely get my MMA twice a week again.

30 miles walk/ride - I'm pretty sure I do this, don't always use a pedometer but plan to be more diligent this month.

I will not be cleared to exercise again until mid month, but I should be able to start working on cardio at that point. I am going to set a goal of 50 miles on the recumbent bike.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
