Fell Off the Wagon...How do I get re-started?

Recommended Posts

Oh my gosh, where do I start? My last fill was in June 2013. During the month of July, I was given a Lindt White chocolate bar and now I am addicted!!! Not only to the candy, which I never used to eat, but now I'm addicted to carbs again. I KNOW my pouch has to be stretched out big time. I've gained back about 10 pounds.

My problem is I don't know how to get re-started. I haven't been to see my surgeon since the June fill. I haven't been to see my family doctor since the end of September. I KNOW I have to face them, sooner or later, but I know they're both going to be very disappointed in me. I just don't want to face them.

I was HOPING someone here may have gone thru this and can offer some good advice...besides telling me not to eat the candy, I know that. It is SOOOOO delicious and creamy. Any suggestions as to how to get UN-addicted to the white chocolate, other than to say "Stop eating it." Also, how do I get UN-addicted from carbs again. I was HOPING to lose a few pounds BEFORE I do back to see either doctor.

Can anyone offer any help or suggestions? Thanks, in advance, for anything you can say.

There is nothing you can do but decide to stop eating it. I know that this is easier said than done, but really, what choice do you have? It will suck for a day or three and your head will tell you that you want it MUCH longer than your body will, but YOU and only YOU can make the decision to stop eating it.

Stop eating it. Carb will scream your name for a day or four and then the "need" for them will fade and you will be able to break away from the addiction. What good is that candy doing for you anyways? Why are you eating it? I know you want to hear more than to stop eating it, but really, that's all that can be said.

Stop eating it. Don't buy it, don't keep it, don't go near it.

Oh! I put boogers in it. Just so you know.

You can take a page out of a sleevers book and do a diet reset. Start over like you just had surgery, log everything just as you did before. It'll take a couple weeks without bad carbs for those cravings to go away.

Unfortunately white carbs create a chemical reaction in your system that causes you to crave more of them. I've had to reset a couple times in the past couple years. It isn't easy, but if I can do it, you can too.

the first thing you need to do is to make a appointment with your surgeon. you need to discuss whether you need a fill or not. and don't bring candy into your house. period. i had christmas candy in my house and usually candy isn't a problem i am a salty craver instead. but i started eating a piece of candy here and there. drove me nuts . i finally gave the candy all of it to my husband and he hid it somewhere. he said he will fill the stockings so i don't have to. since i can't say no to chocolate right now i don't want it to be a issue anymore. today was a great day not having that stuff around. i feel so much better about myself because i ate healthy and exercised. start walking after making your appointment. it's hard to stuff your mouth if you are moving. i hope you will get back on track starting right now. no tomorrows for you. remember why you had surgery in the first place and how good it felt when you were losing wt. you can do it again. don't wait till after the holidays. i know you were thinking that tomorrow is monday have a healthy active day. good luck and best

I was banded on May 10th 2013. From the day of the operatin till Christmas I followed a very strict food plan ( no carbs, Proteins , also vegetal ones, a lot of salads, two spoonfuls of olive oil a day, skim milk or yogurt.

I lost 100lbs.

At Christmas I tasted sweets and other dishes which belong to our tradition (I' m Italian).. and from that day on, it was all more difficult.

l can understand what you feel, but I think we can always decide to resume our journey to helth and target weight.

Why don' t you join Overeaters Anonymous? They are very helpful.

The advice I read here are wise, but it is better for us not to travel alone.

When I go to OA meetings , I feel stronger because they support me.

Love!!!!

I am trying to understand exactly what it is you're saying.....

Your signature says you have 9cc's in your band? In one year? How big is your band?

2nd...are you freakin out because you eat a chocolate bar now and then? Or eating them all day long...or did it start with the chocolate bars and opened the flood gates, knocking down your self discipline and self control, and now you can't stop eating everything excessively?

And now you feel you're "Off the Wagon" as people say?

And I'll not get into stretched pouches right now....I can monitor and recognize mine and deal with it by applying some routine maintenance, but I have to be at a certain place first for that to mean anything....

I'll never tell anyone what they are doing is right or wrong, or tell others what they should or should not do....I do try to understand a situation and compare it to my own....

Banded people have a "Reset" also....I do it about every 6 weeks or so, but just for a few days....does put everything back to that "New" feeling....

The problem with banded people though, is that the band is adjustable...and after surgery we have to go through a series of adjustments to get to that place were the band and process begins to work optimally....

You have to be at a certain place, in order for that reset to return you to that place....but a reset is not going to get us to a place where we were never at in the first place....

When many people have complaints, etc, with the band....the first concern is whether or not you have the band fully adjusted to where it should be....it can take months, and many people NEVER get there....BIGGEST negative to the band, IMO, is that it is left to the individual where they want it adjusted...then turn around and say it's not doing anything....

The sleeve on the other hand....much to it's credit, is that it is installed and then that's it...(sort of)..you can't adjustment up or down...it just is....

well, you just start eating better food choices.

eat your chocolate if that is what you want.

you are not on a diet but merely choosing to eat better.

3500 calories is a pound ate or drank

and if you take in more calories than you burn off, you will most

likely gain weight...no matter what WLS you have.

i started out a bigun

and i have had to work hard for every 1/4 pound i have lost

but i made the decision to do what my dr advised me to do for best results..

eat good foods (baked vs fried for example)

exercise and stay hydrated and the hardest thing of all.......doing it

dont wait til Jan 1 to (restart as i have been reading)

start today....

hang in there....you did it before and you will do it again

if you want to.

I know it is huge to say just don't buy it! i love dark chocolate! I had to give away my Halloween candy that I was snacking on. The people at my church were most appreciative! You can start over! The new year is coming, it is a great time! call you surgeon's office, if you need a fill. Maybe you just need to talk to someone, like the nutritionist. Most of the surgeon's have a specialist on staff. I had to restart, too. I joined myfitnesspal, and log my foods, calories, and exercise. I have met goal, can't tolerate further fill, so I had to "press restart" and just do it! Best wishes for a Happy New year. Karen..aka..kll724

Omg, this is getting exciting here. After almost 4 years with the band, I need support. I don't like my feeling of needing at all. But I am a human too.

I have really good excuses, changes of meds, not exercising because of a lot of leg surgeries . Feeling down a lot cause the scale isn't my pal as it was before. Lack of support, let down from a band group set up by me and my friend. A cold for 5 weeks. Oh yes blah, blah, blah,

But did I neglect to tell you that, while making Cookies for friends, I licked my fingers? I found some chocolate walking into my mouth. I bought some expensive cheese and ate crackers with it? Have been doing carbs and seeing how they really are not my friends. I see myself looking around the house searching for more carbs. I even think that I know it's wrong and I do it anyway. I am in trouble here.

My smaller clothes still fit but I have gained about 15 lbs. I am in trouble because I have no support system, ( that's how I feel right now) I never really had a supportive Dr. Or a Dr's office staff that helped. I had to do this all by myself. My wonderful husband was the only support system I had. I think he gave up, he also is 4 years older and has some health issues to work through.

Oh, he just said that he didn't give up on me. Merry Christmas to me.

So after all that talking, I want to to admit here I am.

I am a person who does a lot of research, I belong to many groups.

I am best friends with a gal from London who lost a lot of weight with the lapband, and we are going to get our excess weight off.

First thing I am going to do is always start my good choices in the morning because by the afternoon, I have really set the stage for failure.

I am going to make room for me to exercise on my Gazzele, and no more stupid EXCUSES. and all that chocolate that I keep in this fancy box will stay there. And those Biscottis that I take to the bedroom by 4 at a time to shovel in my mouth will stay there too in the nice cookie jar. I am going to really watch my amounts of food that I put on my plate. DARN IT ALL, I KNOW BETTER.

Don't I ? I AM GOING TO END THIS. I DO WANT TO LET YOU KNOW HOW PROUD I WAS TO BE IN THE "" LAPBAND TALK BOOK "" THAT WAS WRITTEN BY OUR ALEX. I was Ilene from Fla and Ny. I hope that all of you have it in your home. It was well written.

So finally, who is with me? Who is for me? Who is FOR THEMSELVES.?

Let's all talk about what we are going to do about it, let's give ourselves a special Christmas gift that only we can do for ourselves.....hugs and love.

Ilene.

Kathy, your fears about facing the surgeon and your primary care doctor are unfounded. Those people would be happy to see someone come back with a renewed interest in their health. Not someone who just gave up forever. The only person you have to face is yourself. You CAN do this.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
