Not the response you wanted...Oh you've lost weight? really?

Story time:

So I went to my gramma's house two weeks ago and while I was there we were chatting about clothing and such. My gramma tried to send me home with a huge bag of potatoes which I kindly told her I was not interested in. She shot back with "What you don't eat potatoes now either!" (Referencing my parents who are healthy eaters as of these last two years and having lost lots of weight and wanting to keep it off.) I told her "No I eat potatoes but I will never remember to take them home with me." I then proceeded to mention that I do try to eat a little better and that I had lost 50+ pounds....She looked me right in the eye and said "Oh, you've lost weight? Really?" I was kind of taken back by her comment...can she not notice?? 50+ pounds is a lot. My heart sank to the pit of my stomach. Did she say this to be hurtful or is she truly that blissfully ignorant to my weight loss. *Note:she does not know I had the surgery...She is very critical of my mother who had RNY many moons ago. I didn't dare tell her about my lapband. Yikes that's scary.

Anywho, has anyone ever had this problem with friends and family? What did you say about it? How long did it take for your family to notice your change? And whats your current weight loss?

I think sometimes it is difficult for people to accept changes. If your family is like mine, eating is a celebration. When we get together we cook and we eat! Most older people see nothing wrong with a little "meat on the bones" and think all these weight loss ideas are pointless. I think several people fail to understand that it's more than looking good. We want to be healthy. I want to lessen the pain on my already arthritic knees... I want to avoid the borderline diabetes... and mostly I want to FEEL GOOD!!!!

I don't want to think of it as some people are haters. Like I keep my procedure no secret from anyone as when I am excited I can't keep my mouth shut! Most people say oh you aren't even big enough to consider surgery. I say, funny a team full of experts disagree! People can say things to hurt our feelings sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. I think it is important to stay focused and remember what YOU WANT in life. Think about it... how many times have we heard hurtful things about being overweight? I know there are many times I have felt uncomfortable or family members made comments that hurt my feelings. Either way, family will be family!

Good luck !

Some people just dont get it, I am very lucky and have supportive friends and family.

It sounds that you are used to her not being supportive of anyone's weight loss but think that she will be different with you.

Grandma's, and I am one, do'nt change easily, do what you have done with her "compliments" all your life - file them in the trash can and go on with what you know is true.

If you are having trouble keep one pair of your way too big scrubs and hang a pair of of the size you want to be next to each other. Every day you get this treatment look at the big ones, look at your goal and look where you are that day. That will make it more tangible and you will be able to brush off those "compliments".

Believe in yourself and let those taunts die!

Jealousy is a bitch. Grandma thinks potatoes are love and wants to give some to everyone. Yes, we people over 65 can be abrasive sometimes, but God love us we care. As far as sisters go. Well, I don't have any so can't comment. Fat sister wishes she was getting thin too and can't deal with her own issues.
