Did any of you have food funerals prior to starting your preop diet?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for 1/13/14 and I start my preop diet on 12/30/13 and lately I've been putting down so much food. I feel like such a loser, but in a way I feel like it's my last hooray. I know it won't make the mental journey any better, but I am reading Emotional First Aid Kit. I don't know I'm probably just making excuses, which is why I'm over weight and need the surgery in the 1st place.

funeral...nah I had mardi gras...Days and days of things I thought I would never ever eat again...It was bad! the last meal I had was my all time favorite....

After I had the sleeve for a long time I was glad I did it..But as time goes on I realized I can eat almost anything I want..just not so much so it was kinda fruitless really...

but what is done is done!!!

Oh yeah and I had a lot of them!!!!! You name it and I ate...twice!

But, it got tiresome thinking about it. I started my 2 week pre-op diet a day early just so I could stop thinking about it.

I think it's normal.

I will tell you this, however...at 4 weeks out, I don't miss those foods to which I said goodbye. It's weird. I was a Pasta and bread lover and right now, neither has any appeal to me (whole wheat Pasta is on my approved list and I could care less). I made my yummy yeasty dinner rolls at Thanksgiving when I was two weeks out and I had no desire to eat one. They smelled good, but that was about it.

I think it's healthy to say goodbye, but don't go overboard. I started prepping for my surgery 4 weeks prior to surgery at my surgeon's suggestion - things like eating slower, taking smaller bites, mindful eating, integrating shakes, cutting back on caffeine, etc. Those will help you when you're post-op.

Good luck to you!

I had a food festivus! My wonderful husband actually asked me what meals i wanted for dinner every night for 2 weeks and we planned out a schedule. Since i'm a vegitarian and my husband hates veggies, there were a lot of dishes i knew i could never have again (even as a bite from his) because he would never want/eat it.

1 week before surgery we went to Mexico for our wedding anniversary and i drank my face off. Funny thing is, it's been over 3 months since then and i really couldn't care less about not having alcohol.

It was cathartic for me to indulge and eat at excess for the last time ever. Don't feel guilty. This is a big step and it's forever, so do what you need to do to feel comfortable with your new life style.

I'm down 62 lbs from my heaviest and i'm 2 1/2 months post surgery and i don't regret a single fat meal i had before my pre-surgery diet. I never cheated on my pre-surgery diet, i was locked into the mindset. I allowed myself the time to go crazy, now it's time to get healthy and love how i look again.

So not all of us do.. I did at one point go to the grocery store and bought a pint of ice cream to eat before the pre op.. And as I've said here before after I ate it, there was nothing...

It didn't make me feel special, happy or content. It was just gone. I guess because thinking about it, it was that kind of behavior that got me to the point of being morbidly obese and needing to do something so radical like cutting 85% of my stomach out.. I think to if you do this (eat everything) it will just add to the total that needs to be lost.

Sounds like I'm the odd man out here.....I did not have any food funerals (nor mardi gras LOL) I'm glad I refrained---I think it would have been harder for me preop and post op if I had indulged :)

I also held to the preop diet...I didn't want to jeopardize my surgery......I had been told not only was the preop diet to shrink the liver, but it would also give the surgeon confidence their patients would be compliant with their surgeon/nutritionist's food plan post op.

Wishing you all the best!

I agree with it just being gone. I've found post op that i can cook and eat my healthy options instead and that the joy is in the cooking, not necessarily the eating. Also with over indulging, i now find that i'm more glad i have this new tool that makes me feel comfortably full after only a little. I do not miss my unhealthy behaviors from beforehand, seems i actually feel more free to enjoy other things without the food binge regret. A long time ago a friend said something that really stuck "nothing tastes as good as thin feels". I'd rather stick to my diet and be a healthy person and enjoy my body and life without being glutenous.

Nope. In fact, I started my pre op a month early. Too much food was rushing me to an early funeral so I saw no need to indulge further. I know I will eat whatever I want again, just not in the quantity I was before. Oddly, a lot of my wants have drastically changed and I don't regret missing those final binges at all.

Look at the 3 of you...so good!..I was on the pre-op diet twice and they cancelled my surgery the first time because someone had an emergency...So I spent 2 horrible weeks drinking this Protein slime for nothing...Before I started that pre op they told me to leave the hospital and pick up the slime on my way out...I did that..And I started right away with no cheats..

When I found out I was rescheduled for the 2nd time I thought about it and decided that I would eat what I wanted until the 2 weeks came up again...I lost 27 lbs..the first 2 weeks and after, ate what I wanted and felt that it was a good decision for me personally....the second time I lost 1 lb. more.....The only regret I have is that I now know a year later that there is no food that you cannot eat. Food in a limited space but non the less food....

When after all was said and done and I was over 6 months with out eating anything..I was pleased as punch that I had my funeral...Would not recommend it to anyone...But for me it was a good memory that took me through a loss of 95 lbs. to follow....while in the hospital being fed on a tube.

No excuses just did not see it like others do..By the way...6 months without eating really detoxes a body...So there was a big nothing going on for me..I had to learn to eat again..They actually had to teach me how to swallow and move food around my mouth....I thought about the good old days and even though I would never want to ever do that again..For me it was good stuff......

Very valid point, when i did my food funerals, i also had NO idea that i could have most of that food again, just in very restricted quantities. I had my NUT and surgeon saying, no never again can you eat something over 5% fat and carbs EVER. That finality drastically influenced my decision. Things would have been different had i known.

As for the pre surgery diet and it being cancelled, THAT WAS MY WORST NIGHTMARE. I though about that every day up until they put me out on the table.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
