When will i start to feel ok?

Recommended Posts

I'm 4 weeks out and I'm just starting to feel like my "normal" self. Up until last week I needed to take a daily nap like a baby!!!....allow yourself time to heal and the pain will cease and your energy level will come back.

I'm 5 weeks out and am still falling asleep during the day and have insomnia at night. It's very frustrating! I work 12 hour days and cannot fall asleep at work. Worried.

my surgery date was 12/11, and I felt better yesterday than I do today. I'm trying to take it easy on myself, but I'm not used to feeling this week. This morning I took the omeprazole by pill, and I feel like its stuck in my esophagus. I have sipped Water and tea and broth, and its still there. I am also getting the hiccups about every hour or so, and they are pretty painful. I have lots of gas but no bowel movement yet- though I haven't eaten anything substantial for 5 days......

I am very thankful to have found this blog. It has already answered quite a few of my questions. Good luck to everyone!

Any vets have insight on this topic?

I don't think I'm technically a vet but I'm 10 months out so I'll try to help. You all are less than a week out from major surgery. Your nutrition is not what your body is used to. I'm sure you aren't taking in all the carbs you're used to so you're body has to find a new source of energy. That will be fat soon but you have shocked your system and your body doesn't know that yet. It's not uncommon to be exhausted after a shower with any surgery. Grocery shopping may be a bit much too. I was like a baby the first week. Drink, sleep, pee, pass gas (no BM) for a week. By week 2 my energy was better. Could get through a basic shower, not shaving and all that fancy stuff. Give yourselves and your bodies some time. Enjoy your time off work near the holidays. By week 4-6 you're body will have figured out what the heck is going on and you'll be up and running good as new.

It took me a good three weeks before I didn't feel like crap all the time, get tired all the time, want to pass out all the time. I felt great right after and then I started to get tired and I could not understand it. Why was I so tired??

Well let's see. No calories. No caffeine. No sugar. No carbs. Major surgery. Barely hydrated. Incisions. Recovery from anesthesia. MAJOR surgery!

People here told me the same thing I'm telling you. Take it easy. Rest. sleep. Cut yourself some slack. Pretty soon, once you graduate to real foods, you will have more energy than you know what to do with.

↑↑↑ Exactly. I didn't even go grocery shopping the first week, even the second I didn't go alone. If you make it through the shower, the first week that is a feat in itself. Just relax and heal, sip that Water. I promise soon you will have so much energy you won't know what to do with it. Don't sweat the small stuff, your energy will return :)

I was fortunate I felt great from day 3 and was off pain medicine by day 4. I saw three doctors the first week post surgery and two were amazed at how well I was moving and doing so soon after surgery. I tend to overdo things and have been accused more than once of burning the candle on both ends. I had another surgery on 11/4 which was 10 days after sleeve surgery. I then started to work 4 hours days from 11/5 to 11/8. I don't know if it was the combination of the second surgery, the anesthesia that close to another surgery, but that week I was dragging big time. I returned to work full time on 11/11 and came down with a cold three days later. That also took its toll. I finally felt like I had all my energy back around the 5th week. I still find myself sometimes not as focused as I used to be prior to surgery. One of my doctors said it takes awhile for all the effects of the anesthesia to leave your body.

This is major surgery and it takes time for your body to heal.

I was on my pain meds for 1 week and took 2 weeks off of work. I had surgery on 11/25/13 and I honestly.......almost feel normal today. I still have some pain in my larger incision that my stomach was removed from BUT I can still feel it somewhat and it is very minimal. Everyone heals differently, I strained myself about 1 week ago so it may have taken me longer than usual. Everyday gets a little better, take it easy for a few days and rest up so you can heal. Good luck! I am so very happy I am finally feeling normal. I no longer have to hold my stomach to stand up :)

This is a major surgery. You are going to be tired. I'm almost 4 weeks post op. I feel pretty good. I still get tired easily. I promise you each day will get better. Just focus on getting your fluids and Protein Shakes in. Walking is very helpful too. Good luck!

I've been very lucky as well. I was sleeved on 11/22 and haven't really had any pain or nausea. Other than the obvious change in diet and eating habits, I feel almost normal. If i had a really active job I'm not sure that I'd be doing this well, but so far, so good.

I have a 4 year old and a 10 month old. My husband had to take care of the smallest the most for about the 2 weeks. You have to be really careful with picking them up at the beginning. My 4 year old helped a lot with picking things up from the floor and what not. Take it easy for sure.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
