Are You Having Someone Stay With You In The Hospital?

Recommended Posts

It's generally business as usual for us. My husband has committed to be there when I have the surgery and for most of that first day, but then the next day, depending on when it lands, he can go to work, my teenager can go to school, etc. I don't want it to be too much of a fuss.

My husband stayed with me the whole time. My parents kept our son so he could stay with me. I was so glad he stayed because he helped me in the bathroom. On day 2 they let me wash off and he helped with that too. It was better him to help me with that than a nurse because he's seen it all before lol :)

My husband stayed the whole time too! He left a few times to do things but came back. I was glad he was there.

My husband visited but I didn't want him there most of the time. I was just sleeping/resting and kind of out of it. He was just a phone call away and he did visit every day (I was there two nights). When I felt up to it, I just read. Never turned on the tv.

I was really sick after surgery and I needed someone to stay with me. I would definitely recommend having someone stay with you.

I was just fine alone at the hospital. the nurses were very attentive, and i slept most of the time. you should do what makes you most comfortable.

I really needed someone to stay with me for the first 2 nights home from the hospital. my sister stayed with me, helped me in and out of the chair, played gopher, and watched movies with me. I would recommend you have someone with you for when you get home.

Hope the pre op diet is going ok for you.

My husband and I were sleeved the same day but if it had just been me, I think if have liked to have him there. I didn't need help, but I kinda like having him around. He makes me happy, loved, and cared for, and that's always good when you don't feel great. :)

So do it for the company if you want, not for the help is my point.

I wondered too but we have small kids and no family within 1000 miles so we had a friend pick then up after school then since my surgery was so late in the day and they couldn't get me a room until 930 PM he came up with me and got me situated then headed home. Got up, got kids off and came back in the am. I was super sick but had phenergan which knocked me OUT so when I did need help I paged my nurse. It was a-ok. I was glad to have a bit of alone time hehe! The next day when he came I had phenergan again and passed out during our conversation lol!

So my answer is, while I worried up front, it was ok that I was alone both nights! I even brought ear plugs and just slept and walked laps the whole time!

My husband stayed with me. I was only there for one night. It wasn't really necessary but it was nice to have him there.

We live 3 hrs from my dr, so we checked into a hotel the night before surgery and booked it for 3 nites (since I was staying for 2 nites). Had I know that the hospital room I had (wonderful hospital and staff, btw) a guest bed built into the window seat, we could've saved some money! LOL. Hubby did take a nap 1 day there (the window seat even held pillows and linen underneath)

Not sure hubby would've liked to have stayed with me however. Then he'd had to have hidden his tacos and burgers that he, no doubt, enjoyed when he left me several times a day.

I want folks with me when I am home and dealing with my new digestive system. At the hospital, there's plenty of help.

I am a firm believer in having a family member with you in the hospital at all times. I had wls as outpatient surgery tho and was utterly grateful my sister was there to baby and caretake me so I only had to rest and get up to walk and potty and nothing else. She is a beauty and it was a wonderful gift

The main thing is: Whatever makes you comfortable.

For me (an RN) and my nurse friends, we agree that none of us will have to be alone that first night in a hospital, ever. It's great having someone right there without even having to ring the call light, so if you wake nauseated the basin is handed to you and then a cool cloth.

And then there's the tiny chance that something could come up that needs a rapid response - bleeding or very high blood pressure or pain that's not controlled. In that case it's best to have an advocate who will speak up for you if need be.

Thanks, JeanZ, for stating 'whatever makes you comfortable'.

I want to be alone in the hospital. If I can't trust the hospital staff to provide my care without guardians, well, hey, my heirs will have a great lawsuit. Seriously, I trust nurses, orderlies (do they still have those?), nursing asistants and residents.

And I like being alone with my recovery.

Whatever one considers right for them is the right answer.

I was once in Intensive Care for three days and I didn't even tell anyone in my life until I got out of ICU and was in my room. Even then, I only called a co-worker to deal with an upcoming work deadline. Being alone was right for me.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
