I am about 11 months out, and I also have a high pressure job where I manage people and projects, requiring a high degree of competent thought. I have been thinking lately that I think I'm a little sharper than I was a year ago. I think it might be because I feel better and have more energy, and my diet is much more consistent. Before, I might have been walking around in a "food coma" some times, and now that never happens.

You're awesome thanks for the feedback

I have memory loss but that was because I was in a coma for 19 days....Due to complications with the surgery...I have not even heard of anyone else having this except for those who went through months and months of issues.....

It is good to ask any question on here.....

@RJ'S/beginning .... is it an active thing or was it a temporary loss?

You and Lauren are the class clowns ... lol

Dude, your memory already sucks!

My name is Laura :D

But really there are some minor side affects with any WLS, memory loss is one I wouldn't worry about,

In the beginning I was fuzzy but it was from my body adjusting from eating like a cow to eating a very restricted amount.

Hi Mike,

I had my sleeve done in mid sept this year. I am a doctor and work as a consultant and that is really stressful and high pressured job. Initially I noticed loss of stamina in first few weeks post surgery, but now I have so much of energy plus I have taken more roles because i don't feel lethargic.I would recommend this procedure because apart from health benefits it will help you to move ahead in your professional life. Hope this helps.

It was great hearing from you, I appreciate your time.

I'm early but there is no problem with memory loss; if anything I have more stamina and energy which leads to less falling through the cracks. Basically, I juggle cats for a living.

Anyway, that's been my experience. Especially once the anesthesia and painkillers are out of your system.

Maybe we should start by asking where this question came from.. never heard of memory loss or the such.

I suppose there could be thousands out there with memory loss and forgot how to get online?

Any thing medically claimed to back this up?

I am still newly sleeved. I took three weeks off work from my job (high pressure and op tempo - military related). Physically I could have gone back to work at two weeks, but cognitively I still felt like I had surgery brain. I was slow to make connections and I had lapses in memory. I haven't had any problems since and I couldn't be happier about my decision.

I actually have heard this several times. There is some scientific correlation between ghrelin and memory. However I can't recall any thing concrete between being sleeved and reduced memory. Anything read in here is purely anecdotal. I have read something that suggested the switch from the "all you can eat" diet to very low cal/low carb diet suddenly can leave a person a bit hazy and lacking in concentration. But that has nothing to do with ghrelin nor is it permanent.

Vitamin deficiency, specifically Vit D can effect your memory. As many others have stated no surgeon has ever given warnings of memory loss.

I don't recall being told there was any chance of memory loss either (or as Laura and Butter have handily pointed out ...perhaps I was told and forgot?) ;)

Seriously though I don't ever remember hearing that or reading that or being told that by my surgeon.

I was MUCH more worried about my temporary vision loss (I was blurry for a few days after) but it was due to the nausea patch I wore behind my ear in the hospital and for a day or two after surgery. Once I removed it and a few days passed my vision returned to normal.

I think anything is possible during that first few weeks post-op. You aren't eating, drinking only liquid Protein and Water, resting, walking, and napping. So if you can swing it I would recommend a week or more off from work. Recovery period is when lots of things go a bit wonky with our bodies but if you follow protocol and don't experience any type of complication, most of the stuff that is 'off' right after surgery clears up within a week or so.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
