Thanksgiving.....!?

What are your plans to stay in control? Could you share some good tips.

I think I'm going to try to bring something to share that is something I can eat.

i am letting the band help me say (when)

its just another day like every other, we must eat..we cant starve or go liquids...

i will eat my allotted amount, make (decent) choices but not deprive myself..

def looking forward to my cranberry and my dressing i make...UMMM good

No deprivation here :wub:

You said you would bring something "you can eat"....can't you eat everything/anything and just adjust the portions?

To keep my diet under control, I stick with eating a lot of Protein and high Fiber vegetables like green Beans. Only after I've eaten my fill on those types of foods do I allow myself a very small portion of dessert. I usually measure it out in a normal coffee cup. 1/2 a cup is my normal serving size for Desserts.< /p>

No cooking for me this year so that will help with the grazing that used to happen all day. I am spending Thanksgiving with my best friend and her family and I plan on having a little bit of everything I normally would (minus the bread) and just enjoy the day. I'm also going to attempt a "Turkey Trot Virtual 5k" and time myself for the first time ever. Hopefully it will be more running than walking! Hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

Agreed, I will eat everything I usually eat just in smaller quantities and chew a lot! T-day will be 4 weeks and a couple days post surgery so I will be transitioning from softer foods to real food, but I will not have had my first fill yet, so as long as I chew well I should not have any problems. One thing I have heard has caused problems is dry foods, so I will be a little careful with the turkey and make sure I don't try a piece from the outside of the bird that might be dryer and tougher.

One thing I am NOT looking forward to is that my mother-in-law (we will be at their house) knows I have had surgery and has already asked my wife a couple times what I can eat. I keep trying to tell her just cook what you always cook or what you planned to cook, I will be able to eat most or all of it, if there is anything I don't want to eat I'll skip it ... but I don't want everybody talking about my food needs all weekend. Quite frankly, I don't talk or think about food that much anymore. I eat what I need to eat and move on!

I try to eat more high in Protein, and dry low carbs. I'm sure I might nibble on some treat. But I'm going to try to keep it just that a nibble. I usually can find something in that category, but sometime it's hard to.

I am glad this topic was started. I am three weeks out and I am hosting Thanksgiving. I have only one family member out of the 25 that will show that know I had surgery. I figured I could eat turkey, green Beans and I may splurge on either a taste of mashed potatoes or pie....just a taste. I feel I can do that now. I have been fighting it in my mind about what to do/eat in front of everyone. I have my first fill the week after Thanksgiving. I do have 2cc's now, but really have not had any issues with any foods I have eaten so far.

Any additional advice would be great. I am trying to not worry so much and just let my band talk to me.

I just saw my doc yesterday. He said to focus on the turkey & veggies. And try to stay away from the bad loaded carbs. Which I will try my best to do. But the others are right too, listen to the band. I'm finding that a little easier now. I am also finding, I kinda don't want most carbs ...like potatoes or stuffing.

I just gonna do my best.

We are going to a retirement center for Thanksgiving then taking off immediately after for a couple of days in the city. Most of these elders already eat so little -- I will be in good company. People will hopefully be focused on the amount our teenaged son can put away!

I will be three weeks out and having first fill 12/4.....I am mostly concerned about eating slowly and stopping. I just had my first event of throwing up my food and I never want that to happen again. The idea of this taking place in a large dining room or restaurant, etc. is horrifying. I was just eating too fast and then too much. Easy to do. Steamed beets and a little bit of tuna, a small spoon but I was going at it the way I used to eat. Not sure why it turned into a throwing up episode vs. spitting up, except I have always been gaggy. Sorry to bring this up here but a cautionary tale for those who may be new and tempted to have too much? If it doesn't have anywhere to go, it's going to come up. I had fifteen minutes of very loud somewhat painful hiccups prior to the event.

Main goal for that day is exercising. If it's nice I will see if I can get every one to take a walk before lunch. If it's not I will go myself or be sure to get treadmill time in. This will be my first Thanksgivimg when I, thinking more about exercise than food. Feel ambivalent about the latter.....

Thanksgiving Day will be my first day of smushies, if I remember my chart, correctly. Since I am not cooking the feast, this year, husband and son units are going to sis in law's place for the big gobble. I will still have my staples and not be in the mood to truss up so I will most likely plead recovery (they know about my surgery, thanks to husband's big mouth :angry: ) and gracefully bow out of the day. I'll have my guy bring me home some mashed potatoes and a spot of gravy so I can have a taste of Turkey Day. :)

Three years out....Thanksgiving is just another day as far as food and eating goes....Love My Band!!!

No more diets for me, I have been set free from all that....

3 years ago on Wednesday Before thanksgiving I started my liquid preop diet. I drank 5 Optifast shakes while the food flowed. I didn't host thanksgiving that year so I busied myself helping out, watching parades and football, playing with the random kidlets..... Doing whatever I could to get my mind off food. The next 2 thanksgivings we much of the same,.... I could eat of course but my band will not let me over eat. And if you listen to yours you will find it will tell you whento stop.

Since I am maintaining now I just live my life. I will cook food to feed 15 people... And I will eat less than my 2 1/2 granddaughter. I will be wearing sized six clothing and sit in the rickety chair because I am light enough not to break it. ;)

Thanksgiving is a day of fellowship with friends and family. The food is secondary.

I don't know about you all, but I got a 24lb birdie here that will be twice as much as my entire family will need. I'm really looking forward to having the leftovers, being as turkey is one of the lean meats we're supposed to be focusing on! How often do you have an excuse to cook a turkey? Think of it this way.... This holiday is tailored to us, lean meat galore ;)

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
