I am scheduled to get banded on Dec 5th. I will be using a few personal days at work. I am not telling anyone about the surgery besides my fiance. I am trying to think of a lie to tell my boss and co-workers. Something medically needed..Some other procedure....Any suggestions???

Hope your "procedure" went well for you yesterday. Personally, I would tell my boss and ask him or her to keep it confidential because you may need time off to get your fills. Something to think about.

My suggestion:

It sounds as though you wish to keep your procedure private. Thats certainly understandable.

So why not just say I'm going to be off on medical leave for a private matter?

Unless your boss is the medical department, they have no need to know the type of procedure you are having done.

IMO, you should not falsify any info, ( it could be used against you at a later date ) and you should request the leave be covered under FMLA if it applies to your employer.

Hmmm...I haven't told my boss yet and I don't plan to until I get a surgery date (which will be in the next week or two).

It hadn't occurred to me to NOT tell him I am having weight loss surgery but since I AM having my gall bladder removed and umbilical hernia repaired at the same time maybe I CAN leave that part out after all. I'm hesitant to tell him which surgery I am having (VSG) because most people don't know what it is and I am afraid of getting a really weird reaction when he finds out I am electively having 85% of my stomach removed.

People ask...they shouldn't but they do! When I'm asked I say it's a small procedure, nothing life threatening and I absolutely lie. I've told them it's a hernia.

Why do people want to know. Whenever I've been told of an upcoming surgery or procedure I wish them health.

I don't think it's illegal for colleagues to ask, perhaps your employer it may be. It's just poor taste.

I guess I understand the desire for secrecy but as a manager I'm going to be up front about the procedure and look forward to educating anyone on the process.

I'm treating the band as a form of artificial accountability and for me accountability is a huge part of this whole process. If I held myself accountable all these years I wouldn't have ballooned so the "new lifestyle" will raise some eye brows. I think it'll be easier to be honest and cause less anxiety long term.
