This is a stupid question I know but do you need a passport to go to Tijuana ??

Some people have been able to cross the border with only a state issued "enhanced" DL and a birth certificate embossed with a raised state seal. I suggest having the passport or passport card as being the best and most efficient way to go.

I would recommend a passport. If something happens medically and you cannot be driven across the border, you cannot fly out of Mexico with just a birth cert.

Since 2007 American citizens have needed a passport to get back into the U.S. Apply today. I needed to renew mine quickly so I paid the expedited fee and it arrived in a week. I think normally it takes 3-4 weeks, but may be longer for a first time passport.

You don't need it to get into MX but they did look at ours when we tried to get into the US.

Yes, you must have a passport or passport card to travel to Mexico or Canada, if you expect to get back across the border, that is. As Cindy said, the law changed some years ago.
