Pre-op weight loss requirements?

Recommended Posts

Hello Sleevers,

My husband was informed that he must lose about 70 pounds before he could have the surgery due to a fatty liver. Has anyone else been tasked with such a significant amount of weight loss pre op? He is going to see another surgeon (my surgeon) for a second opinion. He is trying to lose the weight but honestly if losing 70 pounds came easy for him he wouldn't be having the surgery. As I stated in my introduction, I am being sleeved in December and would really like to embark on this journey with him. Your experiences are appreciated!

It's not uncommon, especially if the person is super morbidly obese...

But second opinions are always a good idea.

Good luck to you :)

I started at 384lbs and did not have a weight loss requirement. Surgery weight was 380 and everything went great, so I'm sure he can find a surgeon that doesn't require weight loss

Yes, I'm in the same boat.

I'm in my 1st of 6 mnt required medical diet. I to was told my BMI at 68.9 Was to high (380lbs) they said I had to lose least 80 lbs to get to a safe bmi. Prior to surgery. I too asked the same question.....if losing 80lbs would be so easy I wouldn't need the surgery. But they say it's so much safer an with less complications if the BMI Is in like below 50. I too seeked a second opinion an he's the Dr I'm with now.

Good luck!!!!

If he does have to lose 70 pounds it might not be as difficult as you think. Almost 25 years ago I was on Optifast for 3 months and lost 72 pounds. Of course in my case I regained it all, plus quite a bit more over the course of the next two years after that. There have been two other times in my life (besides this time with the sleeve) where I have lost over 70 pounds.

In your husband's case, all he has to do is to lose the weight, then the surgery will help keep it off. If you read the stories in this forum, there are many people who have lost over 70 pounds on one diet or another, they just couldn't keep it off prior to surgery.

Best of luck to you and your husband.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
