Poll: Do you let Food sit in your esophagus? Or wash it down with liquids?

I thought I would post this topic because it may help others and I wonder if others are still waiting for hours to drink after they have eaten their food.

Someone just made a post about not drinking up to a certain time after eating.

Just think about it, if you "wait" and NOT wash the food down, it is actually sitting in your esophagus, "stretching" it over time, we lap banders do not have a pouch -- like Bypass people do, although we have called it that in the past, the band actually makes a little area above the banded stomach which is actually the lower esophagus.

Well there is a LOT of misinformation going on now about not drinking and eating at the same time. When I got my band over 8 years ago, we were given the 30/30 rule to drink up to 30 minutes before a meal and not drink until after 30 minutes after we ate.

NOW -- based on new evidence that MANY lap band surgeons and nutritionist are not aware of is waiting to drink IS NOT ADVISABLE - BUT CAN IN FACT CAUSE LAP BAND COMPLICATIONS.

Could this be why the lap band complication rate in the US is so high? Could be, there is evidence by the most skilled lap band surgeon who created the green zone that waiting to drink will actually CAUSE esophageal dilation because the food must be washed through each time we eat and NOT sit in the esophagus causing to stretch, FOOD should always pass through the band and not sit for hours or days inside esophagus.

Also I do find that if I eat and drink with my new band, I still get satisfied. Also if we can't drink right after taking a bit of food without vomiting the band is too tight, food and liquids should always go past the band.

Please read this article on this subject in its entirely, I also gave this article to my own surgeon for him to review it because MANY US surgeons follow the Green zone chart to prevent complications with the band.

One of the key lessons learned from Burton’s studies was that each bite of food should pass across the band completely before another bite is swallowed. There is no pouch or small stomach above the band and there should never be food sitting there waiting.

This has been my entertainment and horror this past weekend.... It's one of those can't we just agree to disagree moments that no one is ever going to win.

I totally won in sheer entertainment value alone! :D

I know nothing about the band and I have no desire to know anything about the band. I don't know you peeps and you don't know me, so I am 100% a neutral party.

BEST.THREAD.EVER.

I came in with no opinions about anyone but I am certainly leaving with a few which I will happily keep to myself.

I will say this. If I was the holy Dr. O, I would be ABSOLUTELY MORTIFIED by this discussion. While it's clear that he is a respected physician (by at least one person), his methodology is almost being used as a weapon here. Certainly not how I'd want to be represented.

You are correct this is the best thread EVER, I am not sure Sleeve and Bypass folks are so interested in it. We lap banders are DIFFERENT than Sleevers and Bypass people.

Sleeves have little Sleeved stomachs, that IS stapled, Sleeved stomachs RAPIDLY empties, and sometimes can cause dumping like and hypoglycemic symptoms if drinking or eating sweets or carbs.

Bypass people have a "stoma" that IS stapled, Bypass stomachs RAPIDLY empties, and sometimes can cause dumping syndrome and hypoglycemic symptoms if drinking or eating sweets or carbs.

Lap Banders DO NOT HAVE stapled stomachs, we DO NOT have dumpling syndrome because our FOOD does not rapidly empties....the band is designed to slowly empty from the esophagus into the stomach....we DO NOT technically have a pouch, our band is sutured around our stomach, the band makes a little pouch area around the top of the stomach that separates the lower esophagus from the stomach area and our food slowly slowly dumps from the esophagus into the stomach...

Sleeved and Bypass people are told NOT eat drink while eating, because their anatomy is different....there is NO reason for Lap Banders to do this because our FOOD slowly dumps from our esophagus into our stomach....

Lap Band surgeons in the US have followed BYPASS rules and adopted that SAME rule for lap banders and after years of research Dr. O'Brien changed this RULE for lap banders in Australia because there is no advantage to NOT drink 20 minutes after eating....

FYI former lap band patient and current family practice physician assistant....many of us know the difference between the surgeries. You are more than welcome to express your views and opinions and obvious brilliance on the topic in any way you deem fit. Just don't expect warm fuzzies when you're coming off as an arrogant know it all.

That's OK...I just wanted to put it out there in laymen terms....since MANY do not Know the difference between the Lap band, Sleeve or Bypass stomachs.... and how they work <_<

Wait wait wait a minute. Nana said our stomach's are banded...which means? anybody anybody? That the food does NOT sit in our esophagus afterall.

This thread is completely entertaining because as long as she wants to insert her attitude and/or misinformation I feel compelled to moderate this nonsense

Eh, you know the saying about arguing with fools...

Why can't you keep the debate on the SUBJECT instead of personal attacks? Or is it that you can't come up with any type of articulate way to argue MY POINT of this post?

If you can CLEARLY argue your POINT WITH BACKED UP STUDIES AND PROOF OF YOUR POINT, LIKE I DID IN THIS POST....then you'd clearly HAVE A DEBATABLE POINT...BUT UNTIL THEN YOU HAVE NOT PROVED YOUR POINT...NOW WHO LOOKS LIKE A FOOL? LMAO

I can call you and the rest of the people that are now blocked REALLY ugly names, but again then I would be accused of being MEAN, ARROGANT and a "KNOW IT ALL"...

Now wouldn't I be? B)

I've no desire to argue with you. As for studies and proof of my point? Don't need them, the proof is being made for me right here. :D

Yea you have no reason to prove your POINT, because you don't HAVE ONE...LMAO..

You are here just to stir up trouble, and FEED attacks against me, that's all, aka a troublemaker...

Also I have NO CLUE of what you are talking about and why I am wasting my keystrokes in responding to you.

If you can't respond WITH studies and cited materials of what you are blabbing about...I will no longer respond to your nonsense.

Until you can PROVE what you are trying to say....I will no longer respond to you.

Until then

Goodbye.

Is this thread still going on?? I thought we agreed a few days ago to follow our doctors advice.. And also do our own research to better our knowledge??

Nana stop beating a dead horse, let this thread die...

You made your point,as well as you can..what we choose as adults to listen to you or not is our choice, not yours..

Thank you for your concern over my health, but . Choose to ignore your ranting..And do as I like..which is not listening to you..

Debbi

Eh, you know the saying about arguing with fools...

She doesn't realize you are responding to me.

This is the BEST feature ever- ignore someone and they no longer see your posts even though you can see and respond to theirs. LOVE this feature (snicker)

Lipstick, don't take anything NaNa says personally. It's always asinine to assume someone knows less than them and than challenge them to prove their knowledge as a way to imply they are stupid.

She's still on her high horse...

And yes, everyone, follow your doc's orders ahahhahaha

Ok I must interject here...

This is not about Sides, so who you are "aligned" with and the rejects aside this is my take.

You people are arguing about what constitutes drinking while eating?

Is it chewing and taking a sip as food is still in your mouth or waiting a minute??

News flash they are both drinking while eating.

Now is this "good" or "bad" with the band?

Hell if I know :P

Well we know that esophageal dilation is a real risk you can face with the band. This can happen for several reasons, right? Over filling the band can be part of it along with constant over eating.

So the theory of clearing the food so it doesn't sit there constantly day after day meal after meal makes a bit of sense. But then doesn't also defeat the purpose of the band? I mean isn't that where you would feel your restriction? If it dumps on your full sized stomach won't you still be able to eat more food?

Oh by the way I don't know squat I'm a sleever! :D

But I will say that just the other day another sleever said her doctor, through doing research found that we should drink a little while eating or at least not wait the half hour to and hour!

We asked why she told us why he thought this.

End of subject, no fighting.

There will be a constant revamping of beliefs on everything! And let's face it we will have evolving advice and "rules" with the band and the sleeve as they learn more.

I will not be closed minded but I will also not jump because someone told me so.
