Poll: Do you let Food sit in your esophagus? Or wash it down with liquids?

Recommended Posts

Can we start a new poll on Who gives a crap about this poll? so a poll is to gather opinions but when opinions are expressed we are told we are too stupid to understand the point of the poll? Anyway I am looking for a way to disconnect from certain peoples posts.. any ideas?

if you block/ignore them, you can click to not view their posts they make, comments and they cant pm you or chat w/you..its a great function to use..i have been asking alex to include in the future, those who are blocked by someone, cant comment/quote/like one's post or view my blog etc..also...to me block means just that.blocked.....

Damn...Damn Damn...you mean to tell me that ALL those people that I've just blocked can STILL read my posts? I thought Alex said this would be fixed in this new rollout...ARG! I guess we need to ping him on that new functionality which is a MUST! Because you will get stalkers that will constantly terrorize .....

I've blocked just about half the people in this post, hopefully they get it -- that I can't see their posts and responding to me a fruitless..LOL... :D

I'm hoping in this new version the block feature extends to the mobile apps as well. Previously on VST it did not....and the crazies were always infecting my iPhone.

This is stressful. And confusing! Is there a brain erase feature in this new format so I can un-read all this?

Hi Bandista,

Sorry about this thread turning into a train wreak....

I don't know why you are confused about my post, I was just repeating what Dr. O'Brien mentioned, OTHERS just made it more confusing. Dr. O'Brien clearly says in his videos, they've learned over the years, there is no advantage to wait 20 minutes to drink after eating. In fact he also suggest to drink a glass a wine with a meal WHILE eating, but again, he mentioned to wait and chew your food and wait until that food goes down before taking a sip of wine.

One of the many lap band golden rules have always been to wait either 30 minutes or even up to 1 hour to drink to keep from washing the food through...but again O'Brien mention that after several studies and clinical research there IS NO ADVANTAGE to this. This was the POINT of my post apparently many can't seem to understand this.

However, this does not mean for you to NOT follow your surgeons rules, so please do not get confused by what I post.... every surgical practice does not follow Dr. O'Brien but MANY do, since Dr. O'Brien has one of the most successful lap Band practices in the world and has very low long term complication rates.

Unfortunately, if I block you, you can still see my posts  ...apparently the technical staff has not yet mastered that functionality yet to have both the blocked and blockee to not see each others posts.

Don't worry NO more posts like this...I will only talk about sex for the next few months....

I know the band is placed in "different" positions on each person and everyone will have different experiences based on how their surgeons placed their band.

SOME SURGEONS DO PLACE THE BAND WRONG -- I've known many that say they can't eat most solid food and vomit daily, however I've had 2 lap bands and I've always been able to eat solid food WITHOUT vomiting with both bands as long as I was in the green zone, and my older 4cc band was "high pressured" and very tight out of the gate.

So there IS EVIDENCE of many people having esophageal dilation from letting the food sit in the esophagus too long and in fact if done over many years it can actually cause a "second stomach" in the lower esophagus.

So please DON'T confuse others by saying "there is actually a pouch" when IT IS NOT. AND LAP BANDERS SHOULD NOT HAVE A POUCH-- THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT YOUR SURGEON SAYS.

The band is not placed up by the esophagus it is placed at the fundus which is the top part of the stomach at least 2 to 3 inches below the esophageal sphincter. The reason that the esophagus gets dilated comes from over eating and the sphincter being weak as with acid reflux allowing food to back up into the esophagus. What idiot surgeon would place the band around the bottom of the esophagus.

tn-lapband.jpgThis is where the band is placed normally not at the bottom of the esophagus.

i am attaching my own xray of my band w/plication during a barium swallow..look closely (the small ball (is my plicated stomach) and underneath the (tornado shape funnel) is the band itself..you can see faint a line..

Can I just say a HUGE thank you to hazelsbliss, carolinagirl, cheryl2586, 2muchfun, and the other voices of reason who actually advise listening to your doctors and following their advice!!! When I first started reading this thread, I started to panic! I could not believe we were being advised to go against what all our doctors have told us regarding drinking while we eat. I just want to let you know that I appreciate all of you standing up and having the nerve to go against someone who seems to think they're the authority on all things lap-band. Please never stop doing what you're doing to help us continue to learn the truths that we need to know during our lap-band process! :)

MamaJamma,

I totally AGREE with you, NEVER STOP doing what you are doing to be successful!

I am NO authority on the lap band, it's not my business profession, I was just repeating what Dr.O'BRIEN' article and video says....and wanted to know to Poll others if they were now following HIS ADVICE....

I clearly don't understand what you MEAN by telling others to keep doing what they are doing as IF I AM SUGGESTING THEM TO STOP.-- is this some type of "code language" that I don't understand because I AM not suggesting OR DO I CARE what others do with their lap bands.

I just thought I would put this information out there regarding keeping food flowing through the band AS DR' O'BRIEN suggest.... instead of possibly allowing food to stretch the esophagus overtime....HIS WORDS NOT MINE....

If ANYONE ELSE REPLY TO THIS POST AND SUGGEST that I AM CREATING THIS NEW GOLDEN RULE OF DRINKING WITH MEALS, OR I AM AN AUTHORITY --- PLEASE VOICE ALL OF YOUR CONCERNS and write a letter to O'Brien, who has the most successful long term lap band clinic in the world...and question HIM NOT ME...

Good grief....I

AND Oh...I forgot to mention...remember the Green Zone that everyone follows? O'Brien wrote that chart level too, so instead of writing a fruitless post to me, if you don't agree with O'Brien;s protocol on the lap band please send email him, he has a website.....He did not create the Green Zone chart and his new updated drinking rule while eating WITHOUT PROOF and clinic studies on the consequences of what can happen long term....

lol Mamma, you had to restir the pot ey? ahhahaha

Unfortunately, as you can see, she is more interested in being defensive than having enough introspection to reread the thread and understand that what she actually said and intended to say do not jive. Hence all the backpedaling.

It is a very good lesson for everyone (especially newbies) to align themselves with people who are here to support and educate and not counter the advice/guidance of your own doctor. I will also reemphasize, that if you get information like this that completely conflicts with anything you ever learned, take it to your doc so they can either confirm or deny the new information. You'll come along alot of bad advice on here and veterans are quick to jump on it to correct it. That's precisely what you see happening here in this thread.

I hope our responses helped lessen your anxiety. Just remember to read all the responses, acknowledge who is doing the talking and form an opinion in the end.

Best of luck in your journey :)

I know nothing about the band and I have no desire to know anything about the band. I don't know you peeps and you don't know me, so I am 100% a neutral party.

BEST.THREAD.EVER.

I came in with no opinions about anyone but I am certainly leaving with a few which I will happily keep to myself.

I will say this. If I was the holy Dr. O, I would be ABSOLUTELY MORTIFIED by this discussion. While it's clear that he is a respected physician (by at least one person), his methodology is almost being used as a weapon here. Certainly not how I'd want to be represented.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
