Poll: Do you let Food sit in your esophagus? Or wash it down with liquids?

I know nothing about the band and I have no desire to know anything about the band. I don't know you peeps and you don't know me, so I am 100% a neutral party. BEST.THREAD.EVER. I came in with no opinions about anyone but I am certainly leaving with a few which I will happily keep to myself. I will say this. If I was the holy Dr. O, I would be ABSOLUTELY MORTIFIED by this discussion. While it's clear that he is a respected physician (by at least one person), his methodology is almost being used as a weapon here. Certainly not how I'd want to be represented.

This has been my entertainment and horror this past weekend.... It's one of those can't we just agree to disagree moments that no one is ever going to win.

You are correct this is the best thread EVER, I am not sure Sleeve and Bypass folks are so interested in it. We lap banders are DIFFERENT than Sleevers and Bypass people.

Sleeves have little Sleeved stomachs, that IS stapled, Sleeved stomachs RAPIDLY empties, and sometimes can cause dumping like and hypoglycemic symptoms if drinking or eating sweets or carbs.

Bypass people have a "stoma" that IS stapled, Bypass stomachs RAPIDLY empties, and sometimes can cause dumping syndrome and hypoglycemic symptoms if drinking or eating sweets or carbs.

Lap Banders DO NOT HAVE stapled stomachs, we DO NOT have dumpling syndrome because our food does not rapidly empties....the band is designed to slowly empty from the esophagus into the stomach....we DO NOT technically have a pouch, our band is sutured around our stomach, the band makes a little pouch area around the top of the stomach that separates the lower esophagus from the stomach area and our food slowly slowly dumps from the esophagus into the stomach...

Sleeved and Bypass people are told NOT eat drink while eating, because their anatomy is different....there is NO reason for Lap Banders to do this because our FOOD slowly dumps from our esophagus into our stomach....

Lap Band surgeons in the US have followed BYPASS rules and adopted that SAME rule for lap banders and after years of research Dr. O'Brien changed this RULE for lap banders in Australia because there is no advantage to NOT drink 20 minutes after eating....

FYI former lap band patient and current family practice physician assistant....many of us know the difference between the surgeries. You are more than welcome to express your views and opinions and obvious brilliance on the topic in any way you deem fit. Just don't expect warm fuzzies when you're coming off as an arrogant know it all.

That's OK...I just wanted to put it out there in laymen terms....since MANY do not Know the difference between the Lap band, Sleeve or Bypass stomachs.... and how they work <_<

Wait wait wait a minute. Nana said our stomach's are banded...which means? anybody anybody? That the food does NOT sit in our esophagus afterall.

This thread is completely entertaining because as long as she wants to insert her attitude and/or misinformation I feel compelled to moderate this nonsense

Eh, you know the saying about arguing with fools...

Why can't you keep the debate on the SUBJECT instead of personal attacks? Or is it that you can't come up with any type of articulate way to argue MY POINT of this post?

If you can CLEARLY argue your POINT WITH BACKED UP STUDIES AND PROOF OF YOUR POINT, LIKE I DID IN THIS POST....then you'd clearly HAVE A DEBATABLE POINT...BUT UNTIL THEN YOU HAVE NOT PROVED YOUR POINT...NOW WHO LOOKS LIKE A FOOL? LMAO

I can call you and the rest of the people that are now blocked REALLY ugly names, but again then I would be accused of being MEAN, ARROGANT and a "KNOW IT ALL"...

Now wouldn't I be? B)

I've no desire to argue with you. As for studies and proof of my point? Don't need them, the proof is being made for me right here. :D

Yea you have no reason to prove your POINT, because you don't HAVE ONE...LMAO..

You are here just to stir up trouble, and FEED attacks against me, that's all, aka a troublemaker...

Also I have NO CLUE of what you are talking about and why I am wasting my keystrokes in responding to you.

If you can't respond WITH studies and cited materials of what you are blabbing about...I will no longer respond to your nonsense.

Until you can PROVE what you are trying to say....I will no longer respond to you.

Until then

Goodbye.

Is this thread still going on?? I thought we agreed a few days ago to follow our doctors advice.. And also do our own research to better our knowledge??

Nana stop beating a dead horse, let this thread die...

You made your point,as well as you can..what we choose as adults to listen to you or not is our choice, not yours..

Thank you for your concern over my health, but . Choose to ignore your ranting..And do as I like..which is not listening to you..

Debbi

Eh, you know the saying about arguing with fools...

She doesn't realize you are responding to me.

This is the BEST feature ever- ignore someone and they no longer see your posts even though you can see and respond to theirs. LOVE this feature (snicker)

Lipstick, don't take anything NaNa says personally. It's always asinine to assume someone knows less than them and than challenge them to prove their knowledge as a way to imply they are stupid.

She's still on her high horse...

And yes, everyone, follow your doc's orders ahahhahaha

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
