Surgery was yesterday! Liquids question

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery yesterday and passed my leak test this morning. They gave me the okay to start drinking Water around 5 hours ago. I slept about 3 of those five hours, but the other 2 of those, I've drank 30 oz of water! Is it normal to be able to drink that much in a short period of time? I was under the impression I'd only be able to drink maybe 2 oz at a time. Should I try to slow down even though it hasn't been painful? At this rate, it will be beyond easy to get the full 64 oz each day, but I've noticed a lot of others having difficulty getting it all down

I just got home a couple of hours ago, and you are to sip, sip, sip drinking it slowly. How are you feeling otherwise? I getting ready to take some pain medication, had my last does about 10 AM. Actually if I sit don't have much pain, is when I get up from the recliner, but once I start walking I'm okay. I've had two cups of chicken broth, ice chips, and three sf popsicles, and just made 24 oz of crystal light. Supposedly they want you to drink 8 oz about a hour.

I'm hanging in there other than that. I go home tomorrow. I think I will definitely need meds on bedtime for a while, but other than that, the pain isn't too bad

That is what I'm doing even if I wake up I take a sip. If I sip to much I know it for a few minutes but it goes away. I'm to try a sf popsicle shortly, had sf Jello this morning which actually made the crystal lite no flavor. But I do dilute the crystal lite into 24 ozs of liquid.< /p>

I just returned home from the hospital thus afternoon, my surgery was on the 11th also. My first day post op after I passed my swallow study they wanted me to get in 300-500ml of liquids in, that was a struggle. Now for the next 3 weeks its 48 oz a day. My surgeons told me the best way to know if your getting in enough fluids us by your output. You should be peeing 4 times a day, any less then your not getting enough. I thought that was good advice. Pretty sore but glad to be home.

My doc told me his rule of thumb is trial and error. If you can tolerate it then you're fine. If you can drink that much and it doesn't hurt then that's awesome, keep it up because dehydration is bad. You're told to sip because gulping can hurt with the excess air and filling up to fast.

It's what you can tolerate, congrats. I'm not good at monitoring my intake but I know I'm no where near 64oz.

I had surgery on Sept 25 and could drink 12 oz in a hour with no problem a couple of days later. Not sure if this is ok or not!

I Never gad trouble drinking as well. Nurses freaked me out at the hospital because I wanted more than an ounce safety 10 minutes, doc was like 'well okay, drink it and see what happens' it was no biggie. I did eventually find out if I take a big gulp it doesn't feel so hot but anything shy of a gulp and I'm fine.

Definitely get those fluids in.. I'm 9 months out and it's harder now than it was in the beginning.. I still sip.. I've been dehydrated twice, and it sucks! Eating has become a chord I only eat because I have to.. Going to see my surgeon today because there maybe a restriction. God knows I hope not.. Ppl say this is the easy way out.. Pssh well it's far from it.. Do I regret it? NEVER! Good luck!

If those people only knew, and I bet they would be whining like a baby, because it is so difficult. Don't you just like stupidity when they think they know it all?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
