Please don't leave Mrs Katie because I for one would miss you. I just have one question regarding both posts that I am hoping to get clarification on.

ie. your pouch will stretch if you drink carbonation' date=' or that you can't take pills after surgery)

Is none of this true? My biggest concern is in regard to the pills you can no longer take. I have taken aleve for headaches in the past and they work best for me. My dietician told me that I can no longer tke them. Is this true?

Any information with regard to this will be beneficial to me and thanks in advance.

I hope she doesn't leave. I have no problem with her and do not wish her any ill will.

To answer your questions, I always recommend speaking to your surgeon and medical team. That being said:

1. Carbonation cannot stretch your pouch. It may be uncomfortable and many people can no longer tolerate it, it is physically impossible to expand or stretch your pouch with carbonation. In order for it to do that, it would have to be in a closed area that could expand. While your new pouch does (and should) stretch a little bit over time, it is made from the least stretchy part of our stomach and it has two openings. One from your esophagus (entering your pouch) and the other where your food or liquids exit. Because we no longer have a pyloric valve, our pouch acts more like a funnel. This is why liquids and slider foods (yogurt, pudding, cream Soups, etc.) pass through very quickly. Also, this is why we shouldn't drink with our meals... the food becomes diluted and is pushed though too quick so we don't feel as full and we eat more. Ok, back to the carbonation... because we have the two openings, carbonated beverages don't just hang out in our pouch building up gas. If there is any gas, it will most likely go back up your esophagus or down through your stoma.

That being said, I do not recommend trying carbonation early out from surgery. Additionally, there has been some research suggesting carbonated drinks negatively affect Vitamin and mineral absorption. As with anything, I encourage you to do some searches about this. You will find a lot of mixed responses, but if you think about carbonation from a logical and physiological way, it makes sense.

2. Pills. Some surgeons tell you different things. I would ask them and ask them to explain their rationale. My surgeon allows pills to be taken while in the hospital and from then on and he is at a bariatric center of excellence, so I trust him. Some surgeons say you can take pills, but they should be no larger than a M & M. A lot of surgeons also recommend not taking extended or slow release meds because they cannot fully be absorbed. I've read where people freak out and get worried about a pill getting stuck, but that's really a non-issue as pills are made to dissolve, so they aren't going to be stuck forever, especially if you take them with warm Water.

Aleve is a NSAID and it is recommended we DO NOT take them due to their high risk of causing ulcers in the blind/remnant stomach or in your pouch. I understand they are very painful and slow to heal. I would work with your PCP to figure out what will work best for you to treat your headaches. I get them frequently and take a prescription med that works great for me because I am actually allergic to NSAIDS (Aleve, Advil, Ibuprofen, etc). If you are ever ill and have to go to the ER, tell them you cannot have NSAIDS. Many RNY patients get med-alert bracelets or necklaces that say "no NSAIDS, no blind NG" and other things because a lot of physicians are not familiar with the special needs of RNY patients.

I am NOT a doctor, I have just done A LOT of reading and questioning. Please always ask your surgeon and his medical team and if something doesn't make sense ask them for their reasoning.

I wish you well. :)

I haven't gone anywhere. How are you feeling preemie mommy? I went back to work today. SO far so good. I'm still not getting all the protien in but tonight I am going to pick up some protien bars and maybe that will help. Let us know how you are doing and I hope all of our group are still here.

I'm doing great! Going back on Friday to work.

I'm Also having trouble getting in all Proteins and liquids. Can you already add Protein Bars? That's awesome! Let me know how they sit.

I'm eating eggs, hummus, laughing cow cheese and Beans. Got sick of tuna. Lol can't handle cottage cheese or oatmeal. The one thing I really miss is coffee. Going to ask my nut if I can have Decaf with skim and splenda. I go to the docs Thursday to check blood work, incisions,.etc. That will be our 4 week surgiversary!

I saw the nut yesterday and I can't have the Protein bars for 2 weeks. I found some of the laughing cow cheese. It is fantastic. I had to have one incision worked on at the dr. The incision was open and draining and it was slightly infected. Dr fixed me up. I hope everyone from August 22 checks in

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
