Would You Have Weight Loss Surgery Again?

  1. 1. Knowing what you know now about weight loss surgery, would you do it again if you had the chance to make your decision again?

    • Yes, without a doubt! The surgery has been everything I’d hoped for.

    • Yes, probably. The journey hasn’t been easy, but I’m losing weight and feel that this was my best option.

    • Yes, but I would have chosen a different type of weight loss surgery.

    • No. I’ve had complications and my health has suffered and/or I haven’t been hitting my weight loss goals.

    • I haven’t had the surgery yet, but I’m looking at the results of this poll carefully to help me make my decision!

Hi Alex...

Would I so this again. Uh YES!!! To say it has been life changing is putting it mildly. I feel so much better. Not only with 185 lbs gone... Yep 185 pounds gone... But my sense of happiness has increased beyond anything I could have imagined. The weight is really where I want to be... The mind is still catching up but I'm getting there!!!

You're absolutely right... I haven't given it a chance. I guess I was looking for this dramatic weight loss the first few weeks like I keep reading about. My scale has said 200.2 to 200.8 the last week and I'm ready to scream ... I seem to be dropping sizes but I too wanna be able to see the numbers drop.

I'm 14 days post OP. My loss has been super slow also. In 4 days I've lost .4! I totally understand how you are feeling. It would be so much easier to be having nothing but puréed food and Protein shakes if I would see the scale moving! It's hard to hear about people losing large amounts of weight and mine is barely inching along. I'm no where near giving up though! I hope I did this right! I just now joined this app! I have no idea how to use it! I'm having a hard time learning how to post questions or comments!

Try not to weigh so often. Also a lot of people hit a stall on week two or three.

Just a few days shy of 18 months post-op. Hypertension - gone. Type 2 diabetes - gone. sleep apnea - gone. 130 pounds gone and stable at 155 (5' 9") for several months now. Back, knee and joint pain - gone. Cholesterol - low normal. Virtually all blood work - spot on. Complications - ulcer at the anastomosis that healed completely within five months after diagnosis. I have to be a little careful with sugar to avoid dumping (in the form of hypoglycemia). Other than that, I eat anything I want - it's about control, not denial. Stay focused on following the protocol as closely as you can, maintain a food log, stay active and stay away from the scales as long as possible. Relax and trust your body to find its own way in its own time. Would I do it again? In a second and twenty years earlier if I had the option!

I had RNY 26 Jan 2012. Started at 268 and today I weigh 154. I feel and look healthy and feel better about myself than I ever have. Recently saw my family doctor for a complete physical and some tests and he called me to let me know the results. He said everything looked PERFECT. My bad cholesterol was low, my good cholesterol was high, my triglycerides and thyroid levels were all great! Thanks to the results of the surgery, I have come off of all medications I used to take: blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, GERD. I feel like I've been given my life back. I couldn't be happier! :D

Yes!! I started at 300 lbs on the dot and today I weight 115!!!! I was always the fat girl. I had tried pills, trainers, all the diets, doctors, dietitians... Nothing worked. I would lose some and then gain more. WLS was the best decision I ever made! I've never been so happy with myself. I'm no longer ashamed. I can be the person I always wanted to be. Nothing holds me back!

I most certainly would. I was on 2000 Metformin a day plus a Byetta injection and four injections of Insulin. Now I'm on

1000 Metformin that's all and that might finish altogether as I lose more weight. I'm only on my sixth week after the op. I have more energy can walk further stairs do not pose a problem any more. I have taken pride now in how I dress I feel like a new woman. I am 60 yrs old and my dad died at 62 so I am hoping this will give me the extra years with my grandchildren. :D

Would not think twice about it! The day I left the hospital, my diabetes & blood pressure meds were no longer needed! Main reason why I had it done;))

Totally! I agree! It's hard to be excited about it and keep up the hard work when the scale isn't moving!

In a heartbeat, yes. It's been a roughish road for me - no complications, but a lot (a LOT) of pain, but my diabetes is officially in remission (no diabetes meds since the day of the surgery!), and that alone makes it worth it.

I would definitely do it again.

You look absolutely amazing!! Which surgery did you have? What do you think has helped you the most? Any advice?! I'm 3 weeks out.

Had my RNY in 2004. Although I had a regain (have lost 2/3 of it, though), I am definitely glad I had WLS. If I hadn't, who knows how heavy I would be now! At 62 I have my mobility problems (arthritis - a family trait), but would have had to have 2 knee replacements by now if I hadn't lost the weight.

WLS is not a cure for our problem. We still have to do "the right things" - proper eating, exercising, etc. - but it can help us get to where we want to IF we are willing to overcome the hurdles in our path.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
