Doing a 5K..whaaaat?

Recommended Posts

Did my 1st 5K last year..Oct 2012 Walk from Obesity. It was a walk but it was fun. Signed up to do the Great Glow Run in Charlotte May 3rd and doing the March of Dimes walk on Saturday..I'm a walker but I'm trying to add running to my routine. Guess I'll see what happens..

The nice thing about a lot of 5k events is that walkers are welcome. Takes some of the pressure off to know you don't have to run the whole time or at all. :)

My wife and I are doing a 5K this Saturday (May 4) in Johns Creek, GA that does welcome walkers and runners. I can't run but I sure can walk it. This will be my first and I'm really looking forward to doing it. :)

Hi Suznc! It was a lot of fun and can't wait to do another. It rained on us the whole time and the temps dropped down to feeling pretty cool and windy, but that really felt good over getting hot and sweating.

To be honest, never thought going into it that I'd finish, but I did finish and without stopping anywhere along the way for a rest. Dog tired but it really felt awesome when I was crossing that finish line!

Everyone needs to go a 5K, 10K, or whatever size race you can get into. :D

Did my first 5k before I ever had surgery at 289lbs. Walked the whole thing and came in dead last but I did it with my best friend who had won it the year before but he walked it with me instead. This year we are planning on doing the Run for your lives zombie 5k but as zombies, lol. Also the run or dye which is similar to the color race. It wasn't a weird thing coming in last, I was proud of myself for even trying. So for these next two I am keeping the same attitude.

I hope you had a colorful time! I was at Color My Run in Charlotte this morning as a volunteer. What a blast to splash the runners with color! I will run in The Color Run in the fall but also want to do The Electric Run in July. It's at night & everyone is neon. 6 months ago I wouldn't have even entertained the idea of participating.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
