Just a few more days until surgery. A few questions for the Highland Hospital group -- especially those who had O'Malley. Does O'Malley leave a drain in? Were you in for 1 or 2 nights? How many days til you got your staples out? How long were you on Clear Liquids before you went to full liquids?

I'm having surgery on Monday and have tickets for the RPO on Friday. I'm really hoping that I can just go and sit there. Is this wishful thinking? '

How were you feeling 7-8 days out. This will be Christmas and we're having company. I just want to know what to expect at that point.

Wish I could answer your question. Mine surgery was on a Tuesday and was told I could leave on Thursday but decided to day an extra day. So you might be able to go to RPO. I just started pureed foods an by Xmas eve/Xmas I might be able to do some sort of soft food like fish. It won't be much but it will be something.

Good Luck on you new life!!!!!

Thanks for the input. So how are you feeling? Are you still on pain meds and have you had your stiches out? How's your experience been so far?

Another question for the Highlanders - did you have to drink something and have a scan to make sure you weren't leaking?

They gave mean bottle for pain but I have yet to use it. I yet to be in any pain. Then again every body is different. I feel like nothing ever happened. Although I can say that my food intake has changed of course. I'm already down 25 lbs since the 4th. Key for me I have hitting the gym and walking about 1.5 to 2 miles a day. Very slowly at the gym trend mill.

Stitches on my tummy? I think they are ones melt away after a while. Never told if they needed to be removed. I did have a drain and they took that out at the hospital.

I had Dr johnson my staples did not come out until the first week appointment. I was given protien shakes at the hospital on my second day and was able to do liquids after leaving. As for the drain I am not sure mine came out the day i left the hospital the RPO might be ok the only things is you will be tired and you may have the runs really bad the first few days after you go home.

I had surgery 6-13-12 with omalley! I did not have a drain! I was in the hospital 2 nights! My staples came out at my 1 week appt. I think I was on liquids for about 10 days! 2 days after I got out of the hospital I went to a dance recital all day! And a 3 hr graduation at night! I was tired but I was ok! I brought everything I needed so that I still got what I needed! Just take it easy and listen to ur body! TAKE THE PAIN MEDS while ur out that day! Good luck

So how is everyone doing on there new life? Things for me are going really well. Donated about 12 pairs of pants to the local church the other day. Shirts and shorts are next.

As far as food goes I'm still on pureed. tuna and hummus or mayo(yawn). Cottage cheese, started Wegmans greek yogart and its went down well but only was able to eat 4 oz. Tried Ricotta with a little sauce and it was actually good. Tonight going to try FF Refried Beans and some FF Sour Cream.

Hi all -

Well I made it through my surgery on Monday and came home late this morning. My surgery didn't start until 6 pm on Monday (instead of 3) because they had some emergency. It seems like so long ago already. I'm so happy to home in the quietness and not have someone waking me up every hour. I'm doing okay. My biggest complaint is that I have had a headache for at least a day. The pain meds help but I'd feel much better if it were gone. I'm finishing my last bit of Protein for the day, then a shower and to bed!! I'm very tired and looking forward to sleeping in my own bed.

JPR - sounds like your moving along quiet nicely. And already getting rid of clothes is terrific.

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
