What Was Your Biggest Misconception About Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if any post-opers worried about things preop that ended up being no big deal.....or the other way around?

I worried about dying from surgery but all was well. I worried about puking all the time but it has rarely happened.

I thought I was going to be sick all the time, puking, pooping, etc. etc. I went thru surgery with no problems what so ever. I have puked and pooped but only once in a while... I have pooping issues due to my gall bladder removal 10 wks after RNY but that issues is being delt with = sorry TMI. I never knew it would be this easy to have RNY.

That it is important to get some sugar into you or you will end up with issues that may land you back into the hospital like me!

I thought I would lose 40 lbs a month... Patience is key.. Still have phenomenal weight loss just not as quick as you think it will be. Also.. There are days where I just feel crappy. Wasn't expecting that.

The hydration is harder than I thought. Trying to sip all day and sleeping a lot more than I thought isn't making this easy. Pushing through though. Going to do it. Just taking a little bit. Just needed to whine a bit. I am 4 days post op

I thought that it would be easy since the naysayers all said that this was taking the easy way out. This takes just as much effort time commitment as weight watchers or any other weight loss program. I'm not complaining and I have no regrets, I just don't want anyone that isn't ready to put in effort and commitment to be deluded into thinking that this process is anything like a magic wand because it is not. I now know that its all about changing one's relationship with food. It took a while but my love affair with food has ended. Replaced with a love of exercise and movement. Replaced with a love of being healthy and a dash of self love. I actually just took my food addiction and replaced it with a positive one. But by far this HAS NOT been a walk in the park...yet a walk I'm glad I took...

I agree with you! I have had to chang everything regarding food. My affair is over too with food. I really dont like eating. Lol i have traded food for the gym. Im almost 50 so i did not expect the weight to come off quickly but 32 lbs in 6 weeks. Im so happy. I am however still having problems with gas pains.

I thought the gas would go away after a couple of week post-op. HAH!! Need I say more? I could start my own band with the numerous sounds escaping my body and going on in my stomach LOL

Plus I also expected to have major stomach issues and complications but I have yet to have any, although a few of my friends have both had serious complications but doing fine now.

I did not expect to be as dedicated as I have been, I was afraid I would fail and stop going to the gym. I have had a few breaks due to illness but overall I am still committed.

I thought I would lose faster but once I accepted that it goes more slowly than I thought I am happy with my results and can't believe I am down as far as I am already.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
