Strangest thing, I think they put me out in the holding area. At least that is the last thing I remember. Someone saying, I am going to give you a little joy juice and then I woke up in recovery.

For my other surgeries, I was never put out until I was on the table. Wondering if maybe they gave me Versed and I just have no memory of it.

It's really not important. I was reading on another post about others experiences in the OR ( the thread is about wearing underwear in surgery and is riot to read) and realized I had no memory of it.

Just wondered what others experiences were.

I was talking to the nurse all the way into the operating room and scooted from the bed to the table by myself. They did give me something in the holding area immediately before wheeling me out of there, but it didn't really kick in until after I was in the OR. Who was your anesthesiologist? Mine was Jim Jistel. If you had a different anesthesiologist, maybe he used different drugs. Or maybe you just had a stronger reaction to the initial sedative than I did.

I'm set to go to dr. Spivak's seminar tomorrow and I have an appointment with him right after. I'm so excited b/c I’ve heard so many good things about him from all of you. I went to another surgeon's seminar and didn't get that warm fuzzy feeling. I have a newbie question so nobody laugh. I've heard of people talking about PB'ing. What the heck does that mean, it doesn't sound pleasant whatever it is! Thanks for all of your posts; it's nice to know I’m not alone in this!

I had a lady, Dr. O'Neil, she was wonderful, so calm and pleasant. I think the injection was several minutes before I left the holding area, maybe that why I don't remember. Or maybe, I just don't remember. Actually, it is kind of nice to not remember, I have been in OR's before and am happy to have skipped that part.

carrieba: PB is short for productive burp. I understand it usually happens when you eat more than can go through the band and it just comes back up. Apparently it's not at all like vomiting, and can be avoided by overeating. Maybe someone here who has experienced it can describe it. Since I have not yet had a fill, it is not a problem for me.

Good luck at the seminar, I went to a several. It's good that you are looking around, it will make you more comfortable when you do make your choice.

I also went to another doctor's seminar first and there are no warm fuzzies there. I actually have a friend who used the other one and I can't believe the difference in the two when we compare notes now. Dr. Spivak is precious!!!

I also had Dr. Jistel (sp?) and I did not get anything to chill me out until I got to the OR. In fact, when they came to wheel me out of pre-op I sort of freaked :speechles because I was totally aware, at that point wondering if I might would just rather go home .. . . . :paranoid I also, 'scooched' from the gurney to the operating table and just as I got moved over, I saw Dr. Spivak walk in so it was all fine. The next thing I remember was waking up in my room, not even in recovery . . . burping like my boys!

I posted this in the January Bandsters thread and thought I should post it here, too, for all of Dr. Spivak's newer patients:

I had my first fill today at the SurgiCenter on S. Main. Joy did the fill but Dr. Spivak supervised. It seems that my large incision is infected. Guess that's why it still hurts. My boyfriend has been changing the bandage for me, so I had not looked at it until today. My port is directly below the large incision. The skin around that whole area is still kind of numb from surgery, so I didn't need any lidocaine for the fill. Dr. Spivak found the port by palpitating the area, and Joy inserted the needle. They put 1.5 ccs in and then had me stand up for the fluoroscope. The barium swallow was tolerable (very, very chalky). While you're standing there under the fluoro, you can see the barium going down. They thought I had enough restriction, so they removed the needle, put a bandaid over the area, and sent me out into the hallway to drink a bottle of Water. They said that I needed to drink at least half the bottle before I could leave. If I was unable to get the Water down, they would remove some of the saline. Fortunately, I had no problem and drank the whole bottle in a couple of minutes. They also require that you stay on soft foods for 48 hours after a fill. The whole procedure takes about 10 minutes. For those of you who are Spivak patients, make sure you take your parking ticket inside with you and they will validate it for you.

And now I'm off to eat my Nutrisystem lunch. Let's hope I feel something.

Well, I’ve been scheduled for surgery on 2/28 w/ Dr. Spivak. Only a week and a half away! I'll be honest and say that I’m a little nervous about the surgery portion and how I’m going to feel after. I'm taking the rest of the week off after that so hopefully that will be enough time to recuperate a little before heading back to work. What are some of the things ya'll drank the first couple of days after surgery. I hear chicken broth and lots of Water. Anything else I should stock the pantry with??

Congratulations on your decision. It's normal to be second guessing yourself for the next week. Most of us went through the same thing.

As for drinking after surgery, I used the crystal light peach tea, (until I discovered that splenda gives me gas), now I just drink water.

I was very nauseated for the first 48 hrs and I understand that is pretty normal. No one mentioned that to me, so I wasn't expecting it. Just remember to sip, sip sip, so you don't get dehydrated. Almost anything clear that you like to drink should be fine. I was told to stay away from caffeine, so if you drink coffee or tea, get some Decaf.< /p>

Popsicles are also good. They served me one in the hospital and I was able to eat a couple of bites.

Expect to sleep alot the first couple of days. That seems to be pretty individual, but most people that I talk with did. In fact if you read the posts you will see that everyone reacts a little differently to the surgery.

Where are you having your surgery. Exciting times ahead.

I'm having my surgery at Park Plaza, is that were you had yours? It's always good to have all of the information that way even if it doesn't happen you won't be surprised if it does. I love the crystal light lemonade and i have some of the single serving pouches of that. What kinds of Vitamins do you take? I've heard some take the Flintstones and Tums w/ Calcium.< /span>

Hi Sorry for the delay in responding, I was out of town for the weekend. I did have my surgery at PP. There were several of the nurses in the holding area that had had the surgery done by D. Spivak and it was reassuring to have them there. One of them told me that she chose Dr. Spivak because the anesthesiologist told her he was the best he had ever seen at working laproscopically.

Everyone was very nice, it should be a good experience for you.

Right now, I am using the Viactive calcium and Multivitamins. Bought them because I thought they would help with a bit of "chocolate fix", but really have not craved chocolate at all. Am thinking about changing to a liquid Calcium as I think that would be absorbed better. I will have to go shopping for one, as I don't know anything about the liquid supplements.< /p>

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
