Hi Consuela,

My pre-op diet was all clear liquid except the evening meal which consisted of 3 oz low fat meat an 1/2 cup of carbs...it was for 10 days.

Probably not much help, good luck on your diet. I'm sure you'll do fine.

I'm 58, scheduled for surgery on June 17. Insurance approved with first request...I'm guessing they think they will save money in the long run due to weight induced health problems.....either that or I have really good insurance. Just found this site on a google search.

I was 56 when I had surgery February 28, 2013. I have lost 115 lbs--20 to go to my goal of 150. I also was approved on the first request to the insurance and I think it is both-- good insurance and a healthier me! Good luck!!!

Hi, I'm 50, about to turn 51. Just had bypass on April 17. Everything is going well so far! I am missing eating though. lol

My wife will be having her surgery on June 19. So our eating schedule is off right now but once we finish the diet phases then we will be together on everything. I think that will make things easier.

I'm looking forward to being more active. 50 doesn't feel old!

Well everything is a GO! Received my insurance approval today for RNYon June 27th. I start the Liquid Protein diet on the 13th. I did it before for two weeks to get to the weight I needed to see the surgeon and have my Doc write the letter. It isn't too bad so I know I can do it. Hope all is well with the fellow 50's. We will have to compare notes about the deadly sagging sssskkkkiiiinnnn lol. I hope it isn't too bad. Let me know if anyone in the over 50 group had issues with facial skin and increased wrinkles. I will welcome any advice; lotions, exercises et.

Nope, OleHippieGal, I am 58 and now probably the oldest in the group lol. My surgery is approved and will happen on June 27. I am having RNY at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA by Dr. Petrick. I am nervous but excited. I need to have this surgery to lose the weight for back surgery. I have severe Spinal Stenosis which impairs my ability to walk and I am in pain 24/7....but I keep smiling! Glad to be in the group. Good luck to all of you. I start liquids on the 13th but I did it before for two weeks to get to my required weight so it will be OK. I have many other health problems so I am looking forward to better health and live longer. I have two beautiful daughters; my oldest is a nurse and became engaged so we are planning a wedding. My younger daughter is single; a chef but luckily is on a healthy diet lol. I am hoping that I not only feel good but look good. Anyone worried about excess skin and wrinkles? Let me know if you discovered any lotions or potions to try. Talk soon I hope!

I'm 58 and just starting on this journey. I'm still waiting for the surgeon's letter telling me I have insurance coverage and can get started with all the appointments. I know the insurance covers RNY because I called and checked before I ever even went to the seminar (first requirement to get into program). It's been three weeks and if my letter isn't in the mail today, I'll be making a call down to the surgeon's office. Just waiting to hear the mail truck go by. And waiting...and waiting. ;-)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
