Welcome! Everyone here is so nice. Feel free to ask anything here. So far the best advice in general would be to get shaker bottles and a Protein Powder that you like. And if you want, a crystal light or mio flavor too. They will be your best friends!

Prepare for the gas pain/pressure. It is HORRIBLE and no one told me about it prior to surgery. My surgery was 7/18/12, other than the gas issue everything was fine. Also getting the fluids in is a lot harder than you think.

How long did the gas pain/pressure continue? Did you take anything for that pain?

The best way to expel the gas is by walkin. The sooner you can get out of bed the better. I had surgery in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada and the nurse forced me out of bed a few hours after surgery to try and walk.

I was still too dizzy so I tried again later. I kept walkin around the hospital as much as I could.

Oh and a heating pad is good for gas pain too as your waiting for it to expel. It can travel to odd areas like your shoulders.

I am having a hard time with Protein drinks. I wouldn't buy too many because you might not like the taste after surgery. I was drinking premier nutrition from costco but I find them so heavy after surgery that I barely drink them. I have purchased three

...sorry...I hit done on my phone...

I bought 3 other powders that I can't stand. They are too chalky and thick. My friend gave me a sample of Isopure from the US which is more like a clear juice...koolaid. I like it better. You guys have way more Protein drink options in the States.

Best of luck with your surgery.

Today was the first day I woke up without any gas pain or pressure. So it lasted about 5 days. I was taking the soft gel gas x and I don't think it could absorb fast enough. Yesterday I switched to the chewable and I think that did the trick. You'll be SO happy when you can and do have a bowel movement. The heating pad did work the first few days. I would sit in a rocking chair with it.

I have unjury Protein powder, I loved it pre-op. I add Protein tomorrow so I'll see if I can still handle it.

So upset guys:( At the last minute my surgeon decided he is more comfortable doing the sleeve, but my insurance didn't approve the sleeve only the bypass and lapband,. My surgeon feels I should weigh more, I'm 5ft2 250, Now I have to find a new surgeon, at least I don't have to do everything over since I'm already approved, my surgery was scheduled for tomorrow and he waited to yesterday to change me to the sleeve, I'm so bummed out:(

I'm sorry to hear that. Don't be discouraged. I actually thought about getting the sleeve but my insurance wouldn't cover it either. the insurance requires a BMI of 50, mine is 40. Therefore it seems I would have to weigh more to get the sleeve not weigh more to get the bypass. I am confused by your doctor's decision.

Sorry for the language, but I'm down right pissed off at your surgeon. But lets look at the brighter side. I would rather he tell you he wasnt comfortable with it, then to get in there and mess something up. I'm thinking he wants to do the sleeve because it may be a easier procedure for him. Also if he's the type of doctor to do that to you last minute, you probably needed a new surgeon anyway.

Just think of it as a stepping stone to get on a better path. Go on obesityhelp.com and search for a new surgeon and read the reviews.

Best of luck. We are a team here and it will all work out for your benefit.

A few people have suggested that Protein powder. I have heard your taste buds can change after the surgery. Let me know how you handle it Post op

Hope your search for a new doctor is going well. I started drinking my Protein Shakes again and they are still amazingly good to me. I also can tell my body is craving the Protein. When I wake up in the morning, I feel sluggish until I get my protein. After drinking it I'm fine. So Unjury still gets my votes. I'm ordering 3 more tubs later.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
