Ow soon can we have 1 drink like I'm only a week out and I'm wondering if I should even chance it. I'm telling myself it might be at least 3 months before I should even try. What have you all done? Ps I only drink margaritas or lite beer

Did your Dr. give you any guidelines?

Personally, I would definitely NOT be drinking any alcohol at this stage! Your innards have not finished healing yet at the very least, and at the most, you should be avoiding anything carbonated like beer. It can stretch the anastomosis (the new small hole where your food is passing from your pouch to your bypassed intestine). My surgery center (Mass General) says no carbonation PERMANENTLY after surgery (which can be hard sometimes).

Also, be aware, once you have a bypass, you absorb alcohol much faster than other people. Not to scare you, but alcoholism is extremely common after a bypass.

I would talk to your doc, and I can't imagine it being allowed for at least a few months.

What does everyone think about 3 months of surgery having a shot or two?? It's not carbonated and I'm going to a concert and really wanna have 1-2! That's all though. Bc once again I don't know how it will affect me.

I am 3 months post op and for the past couple of weeks would have a glass of wine a few times. I did not notice that I was more or less buzzed than I would get before surgery. But that is me and my metabolizm... someone else could be totally different.

You are only a week out and no way would I have alochol of any kind, you should talk to your doctor and also remember that alcohol is high in calories and no nuritional value what so ever.

I would ask your doctor, I know the timeline is somewhere between 6 months to a year. I am 8 yrs post op & I would definitely caution you on the margaritas as early on they can cause you to dump, also to this day I cannot drink beer because of the bubbles. I have gained weight the past two years & I attribute some of this to too many margaritas so keep this in mind! Just food for thought...

My dr and nutritionist recommend to wait one year. I know some of my friends after bypass can't even handle a full drink or shot a year or two after surgery. Also there are lots of hidden sugars in drinks.< /p>

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
