How long should I wait after surgery to take a small pill?

Recommended Posts

I am post op, 18 days and I want to start taking prilosec. Prilosec comes in a really small pill form and I am wondering if I should wait to take it or if it should be okay now.

Your experience?

My NUT said I could take everything but Vitamins and fish oil right after surgery as usual. She said vitamins and fish oil are the biggest pills out there and they are hard to break down.

I was taking capsules starting on the first day after surgery.. The nurses and I were all fed up with my IV and veins and got the doctor to agree to let me have all my meds orally. I started taking my Vitamins in capsule form about a week after surgery but was told to wait two weeks before starting the Calcium since that was a larger pill and in tablet form. I'm currently 6 months out and take a "vitamin meal" of about 10 pills twice daily. I just toss the whole handful of pills (including a few large gel caps and tablets)in my mouth at once and drink a sip of Water. Never had a problem.

It could vary by doc, of course, but I've been on my prescription prilosec (Omeprazole) since the day after surgery. It's a small capsule. I was also advised to crush any pills like my tylenol for the first few weeks if they felt too big to swallow, but I haven't had a problem yet. Extended release meds can't be crushed, though, so I haven't taken any of that type of med since surgery. Good luck!

I've been taking small pills and capsules since the day after surgery -- as prescribed by my doctor and brought to me to take in the hospital by the nursing staff -- no problems whatsoever.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
